CRCT NIGHT BURROUGHS MOLETTE ELEMENTARY

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CRCT? The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the state mandated content standards in reading, English/language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The assessments yield information on academic achievement at the student, class, school, system, and state levels. This information is used to diagnose individual student strengths and weaknesses as related to the instruction of the state standards, and to gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia. (GADOE)

WHAT AREAS WILL BE TESTED? Georgia law, as amended by the A+ Education Reform Act of 2000, requires that all students in grades one through eight take the CRCT in the content areas of reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. Students in grades three through eight are also assessed in science and social studies. (GADOE)

WHAT DO THE SCORES MEAN? Students scoring below an 800 are considered “not meeting” standards. If a student is below 800 on one of the core areas required for promotion, he/she will be required to retest. If he/she is below 800 on a retest, retention proceedings will take place. Students scoring are considered “meeting” the standard. Students scoring 850 and higher are “exceeding” the standard.

WHAT ARE THE CONSQUENCES OF NOT MEETING ON THE TEST? Students in grade 3 must pass reading to move on to fourth grade. Students in grades 5 and 8 must pass reading and math to be promoted. If students fail these exams, they can study and take a retest. A student who passes on the second try can move up to the next grade. A second failure automatically triggers a conference with the student's principal, teachers, and parents. If they unanimously agree that the student should be promoted, the student can move up without having passed the exam. Otherwise, the student will repeat the previous grade. (Stephanie Carnes)

HOW CAN A CHILD STUDY FOR THE CRCT? In addition to work done in the classroom, the state of Georgia also provides an Online Assessment System (OAS) that children can use to take practice exams. Each student has a unique login that their teacher can provide you with. A variety of printable practice tests are also available online. Ask your child’s teacher for links. The school has workbooks and other materials that your child can take home to study.

REMINDERS Students should get a good night’s sleep the night before testing. Students should be on time. Please try and refrain from having any distractions at home the morning of the test. It is important that students come to school focused on academics. Students should eat a good breakfast before testing. Talk to your child in a positive way. Let them know you believe in their abilities. Make study time a priority each night. Set up a quiet space and have your child review for the next day’s assessment.
