Pop Art Cushion How to complete the back of your cushion

PopArt Learning objectives Learn how to make a turning (folding raw edge of fabric twice) Understand how to attach your 2 back sections with your front patchwork piece Be able to machine sew a buttonhole and sew on buttons correctly (by hand) Starter: List all fastenings you can think of…discuss

PopArt Step 1 If the edge of your fabric is uneven draw a straight line using tailors chalk to even off the edge…check with your teacher before cutting along this tailor chalk line. Fold along the edge you have just cut and iron down the fold to the width of 1.5 cm Fold and iron to crease it

PopArt Step 2 Fold again to a width of 3cm this time. Iron and machine along first fold edge

PopArt Step 3 Make buttonhole on one piece. Measure buttons to make sure the buttonhole is long enough. Set the sewing machine to button hole Buttonhole setting is 13 or 14 (DT4). See demo in DT6 You will need a special button hole foot, ask your teacher and be careful with this piece of equipment…practice before you sew.

PopArt Step 4 Sew on your button to the other back piece on the folded edge. Make sure the button matches the position of buttonhole.

PopArt Stage 5 Button the two back pieces and pin to the front of your cushion. Remember to do this on the wrong side so that you can turn it inside out ! Pin together and draw a tailor chalk line 1.5 cm from the outside edge. Machine using straight stitch (seam). Do not leave any gaps. Back Wrong side of fabric Button in the inside
