2. Buttons Two types of buttons:  Sew – through: 2 or 4“eyes” on face of button  Shank: hook (called a shank) on back of button

3. Buttons Use a double-strand of matching thread to sew on buttons.

4. Sew-through Buttons Must make a “shank” underneath button to make it stay on longer

5. Sew-through Buttons Shank lifts up button making it easier to put it through a buttonhole. No shank needed if button is just for decoration

6. How to Make a Thread Shank Lay a pin or toothpick on top of button Sew over pin or toothpick Sew 4 times through each set of eyes making an X design

8. Shank Buttons “Wobbly” buttons Already have a metal or plastic shank on back of button so no thread shank is needed

9. Snaps Used to hold overlapping edges together where there is not much strain Two parts – ball half and socket half Use a double-strand of matching thread.

10. Snaps Always attach ball half 1 st After sewing on ball half, put chalk on ball and press against other piece of fabric to mark spot to sew on socket half. Sew 4 times from inside snap eye to outside edge of snap.

11. Hook and Eye Two kinds:  Round eye & hook – used for neckline of dresses /shirts  Straight eye (bar) & hook – use for waistbands on pants/skirts

12. Hook and Eye Attach hook first. It should not hang off edge of fabric a little bit. Mark placement of eye. Eye should hang off edge of fabric. Use a double-strand of matching thread.

13. Hook and Eye Sew 4 times through each eye of hook and eye. Also – sew under hook so it will not flip up.

14. Buttonholes Sew buttonholes on a garment 1 st, then sew on buttons Mark button placement by opening center of buttonhole to mark Cut buttonhole opening using small, sharp scissors

15. Buttonholes Buttonholes are on:  Right front on women’s clothing  Left front on men’s clothing

16. Hook and Loop Tape Best known as Velcro Two nylon strips that intermesh

17. Hook and Loop Tape Best way to attach is by machine-stitching Can also hand-sew but it is thick Does not need a special tool to apply

18. Hook and Loop Tape Hook half (rough side) should not be attached to part of garment that would scratch your skin

19. Hook and Loop Tape Found on jackets, sportswear, shoes, children’s clothes
