Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him, How I've proved Him o'er and o'er.

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus, O for grace to trust Him more.

A man and his Master An Undivided Heart

Psalm 86:11-12 says, “Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.”

Charles SpurgeonCharles Spurgeon comments on these verses: “Our minds are apt to be divided [among] a variety of objects, like trickling streamlets which waste their force in a hundred runnels;

our greatest desire should be to have all our life-floods poured into one channel and to have that channel directed toward the Lord alone.”

A biblical picture of a divided heart: (Jeremiah 2:1-3:5; 31)

In the Bible, a divided heart is simply called spiritual adultery.

What constitutes the sin of spiritual adultery? 3:1, 6-10 a.desire b.devotion c.dependence d.desertion

Jeremiah 3:6-9 "... Hast thou seen that back-sliding Israel hath done? She is gone up upon every mountain and under every green tree, and hath played the harlot...

And it came to pass that through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and stocks."

Jeremiah 5:7-9 "How shall I pardon thee for this? Thy children have forsaken me and sworn by them that are no gods... They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife."

Hosea 4:12-14 "... For the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God."

What causes you to slip into the sin of spiritual adultery? 2:11-13 a.depraved choice b.deadly chance

What consequences do you experience after succumbing to the sin of spiritual adultery? v. 23

a.loss of intimacy – your relationship with God b. loss of integrity – your reputation for God c. loss of vitality – your resources from God

Psalm 106:14-15 "They lusted exceedingly in the wilderness... He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul."

What corrections must be made if you are stained by the sin of spiritual adultery? 31:19-26

Jeremiah 3:12 "Return thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause my anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful."

Hosea 14:4-9 "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from them...

Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein."

a.repent – called virgin – 31:19 b.restore exclusive love – v. 21 c.resist the lures of the world – v. 22

Living with an undivided heart: 1 John 2:12-17

Remember the certainties of God - verses a. sins are forgiven b. know Him to be from the beginning c. you have already overcome d. you know the father e. you are strong (in Christ) f. His word abides in you

Remain in the abiding love of God – verse 12, John 14:23-24 a.this means to do the will of God b.this means being like God

Resist the love of the world – verses a. pagan values and pagan gods - lust of the flesh b. lust of the eyes - captivated by the outward show c. pride of life - pride in possessions, a braggart, pretentious egoism

1 Chronicles 28:9 (NASB95) 9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts.

If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.”

Take Away: Read Psalm 119 without interruption. Read through a second time with the idea of marking how many times the phrase “with all my heart” is used.

Spend time in prayer asking God to help you to live with an undivided heart. Seek Him with all your heart and desire Him above all things.
