X-103 Straw Rockets

Tools and Materials 8 ½”x11” 20lb copier paper 8 ½”x11” 64lb card stock 8 ½”x11” cardboard Foamie sheets Rubber bands Paperclips Coffee stirrer sticks Straws (one size must fit into a larger size) Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks have 2 straw sizes. Scotch tape Masking tape Scissors Glue gun Colored pencils 12” ruler

Glider Wings and Tail + Rocket Fins Make crisp, accurate, straight folds. Folding in half ensures that the right and left wings will be the same. Fold Cut out wings. Fold edge Cut out 4 equal rocket fins. Cut out tail. Alternate wing design. 3” 3.5” 2” 1”

Unfold wings. Roughly 6”. Cut 4 equal fins and bend a small flange so you can glue the fins to the fusaloge. Roughly 2”. Cut and fold tail as shown. Roughly 3”. Glider Wings and Tail + Rocket Fins Alternate wing design.

Big straw. Small straw. You can find these two straw sizes at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. Cut the BIG straw roughly in half. Straw Fuselage

1) Pinch and tape or hot glue one end of each straw half. No air should get through. We will be making a straw rocket and a straw glider. 2) Cut out a 2“ diameter circle out of paper of Foamie. 3) Cut the circle in half. 4) Wrap each half circle into a cone and tape or hot glue. Straw Fuselage

Straw Fuselage Hot glue the cone to the closed end of the BIG straw.

Integrate Parts Hot glue wings, tail and fins onto the BIG straw halves. Insert the small straw inside the big straw fuselage and blow! It may help to wrap a small rubber band around the front of the fuselage to control the center of gravity!

Hall of Fame Planes

Air Show Competitions: 1)Best looking. 2)Furthest distance. 3)Most accurate. 4)Longest flight time.
