F ASTENERS … THE SEMI - PERMANENT SOLUTION The purpose of this quiz is to see what you know, and what you have learned about using fasteners. You will be called upon randomly to answer questions about fasteners. If you do not know the answer to the question, please pay attention to the next person to answer the question so that you can learn. You will be asked again once the next person answers. However, it will be for partial credit. Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

F ASTENERS … THE SEMI - PERMANENT SOLUTION What is the type of nut that is typically used for attaching front hubs on a car? A Castle Nut Why are they preferred? Because they allow you to adjust the compressive tension applied to the bearings and then it is locked by using a cotter pin. Used to lock shaft collars, hubs or sprockets in place. A Set Screw What would you use to fasten thin metals together that is not easily removed where there is a blindside (Side w/o access). Pop Rivet Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

C ONTINUED ….. What about fastening sheet metal together quickly, and is easily removed, and no predrilling is required? A self drilling sheet metal screw What would be the best choice for you to attach a trailer hitch to your truck? And Why? G8 Frame Bolt Flange headed to distribute compressive load, and is harder than typical bolts. Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

F ASTENERS … A _____ is used to allow you to apply grease to areas not typically exposed. Grease zerk (fitting) Using this allows you to apply a male threaded extrusion to wood for the purpose of attaching things. A Hanger Stud Use to distribute load when fastening with a bolt, or bolt- nut combination. How do you know which way to place it? A Flat Washer Sharp edges down Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

T HIS IS A TEST … IT IS ONLY A TEST … IT IS USED IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY … What would be the best choice for fastening two items together, where strength is not highly important, and the fastener needs to sit even with the surface…. A flush head screw What would you use if strength is important and a counter bored hole is created to make the fastener sit flush? A Socket Headed Cap Screw Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

A CHANCE TO REFLECT …. Turn to a partner and give one example of a fastener that has not been used yet, and some of the characteristics of that fastener. If you are alone… think, reflect and hypothesize (Guess!)… You have 1 minute Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

Q UESTIONS C ONTINUED … A _______ will allow you to add internal metal threads to wood. This is especially helpful when access to the backside of the wood is limited after assembly. TEE NUT With smaller screws or bolts, we can lock the nut or bolt to the surface by using one of these… Hint: Can be internal or external. A Star Washer Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

Q UESTIONS …. H OW ARE YOU DOING ? We can use one of these nuts when we do not want tools to be required to remove it. Wing Nut These nuts are used when locking is required, and temperature is not a factor. A Nyloc Nut. These washers are used to lock a bolt, or nut, to the surface of an object. They also use tension, along with sharp edges as the primary means for locking. A Split Lock Washer Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

T HINGS ARE GETTING NUTS ! These are used to cover the end of the bolt, or threads and they are used to add visual appeal to what ever they are holding. Hint: these would be a squirrel’s choice! An Acorn Nut Name these three bolts found in the Cap Screw Family… SHCS FHCS BHCS Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

A RE YOU READING AHEAD ? These nuts can be used in combination with, or used without lock washers. They have no added features. A Hex Nut These bolts have a built in locking ability and have previsions for load distribution built in. Flange Bolt These are needed when a flush headed screw is used and there is a need to distribute force in a wider area. Hint: these are used in detail… E.g. Older car door panels. Finishing Washer Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

A LMOST THERE …. C AN YOU GUESS WHICH ONES ARE LEFT ? Knowing that “Pop- Rivets” once popped can not be removed… What can we use when assembling something temporarily? A Clecko can be used as a temporary rivet Used in conjunction with a castle type nut as a locking mechanism. Cotter Pin Did you know that the pin has to be bent when used. Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

F INISH S TRONG ! These are usually low grade bolts that use a screw driver to tighten them… they come in three common styles… Slotted Flush Headed Bolt Slotted Pan Head Bolt Combination Round Head What do we use to tighten Cap Screw Bolts…. An Allen Wrench Lance Tatro CHSE 2010

J UST A FEW MORE ….. This type of nut is welded into place and provides a set of usable threads. Weld Nut These bolts are used when a tie-down location is needed. This type of bolt provides a loop for ropes, chains, cables or straps. Eye Bolt
