L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Introduction to Fasteners Central High School ROP Engineering and Product Development October 13, 2011 In this lesson, we will explore many, but not all, semi-permanent fasteners. tpub.com

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Types of Bolts

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Hex Bolts Bolts with a hexagonal head and threads for use with a nut or a tapped hole.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Carriage Bolts Bolts with smooth round head and a small square section underneath. Typically used where there is a desire to restrict access to bolt removal. E.g. Fence Hinges or Vehicle Bumpers.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Lag Bolts and Hanger Stud Bolts with a pointed tip. Used to fasten things to wood. Has a high shank strength and aggressive thread pattern. Upper Left: Hanger Stud

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Eye Bolts Bolts with a circular ring on the head end. Used to attach rope or chain.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 C.A.R.T. Engineering Lab Eye Lag Bolts Similar to eye bolt but with wood threads instead of machine threads. This type of bolt has a pointed tip.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 U-Bolts Bolts in a U shape for attaching pipe or other round surfaces. Can be round or square. Is secured by 2 bolts. Typical use is to attach car springs to an axle.

Cap Screw Family Button Head Cap Screw (BHCS) : Sits on top of surface and needs an Allen Wrench to tighten it. Wrench is typically a bit undersized for the shank size. Flush Head Cap Screw (FHCS): Sits into a cone shaped hole and the head sits flush with the surface. Socket Head Cap Screw (SHCS): Can sit on either the surface or into a square shouldered hole.

Torx Much like the Allen sets is the drive pattern. Used throughout the automotive industry.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Types of Washers

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Flat Washers Flat washers provide increased bearing surface for bolt heads and nuts and distribute the load over a larger area.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Lock Washers Lock washers prevent a bolt or nut from becoming loose under vibration

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Fender Washers Fender washers are oversized flat washers used to distribute the load over a wider area. They are used in soft materials.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Ogee Washers Thick, large diameter cast iron washers with a sculptured appearance. Used in wood construction.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Internal Tooth Lock Washers A washer with internal teeth. Used to prevent nuts and bolts from backing out.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 External Tooth Lock Washers A washer with external teeth. Used to prevent nuts and bolts from backing out.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Square Washer A 4 sided washer.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Finishing Washers Used to obtain a finished look. Usually used with oval head screws.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Types of Nuts

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Nylon Insert Lock Nut Nylon insert lock nuts eliminate the need for washers. A.K.A. “Nylock”

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Wing Nut Wing nuts have two thin flat wings and are used where a nut has to be turned with the thumb and forefinger

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Standoff Nut Standoffs are used to provide clearance between parts. A.K.A. “Coupling Nuts”

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Hex Nut A six sided nut.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Kep Nut Kep nuts have an attached free-spinning external tooth lock washer. They provide greater holding power and reduce assembly time. A.K.A. “K-Locks or Keps”

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Weld Nut Weld nuts are a specialty type of nut used to attach parts to a frame.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Acorn Nut A nut with a domed top over the end of the fastener. They are used for appearance and/or to cover thread ends. A.K.A. “Cap Nut”

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Square Nut A four sided nut.

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Tee Nut and Hanger Stud A tee nut is designed to be driven into wood, composite, or particle board to create a threaded hole. rockler.com

L.K. TATRO CHSE 2011 Flange Nut A flange nut has a built in washer-like flange.
