Forgiveness: God's Gift For Us To Exchange Relevance of the word "Forgiveness" Why is "Forgiveness" important? The Bible (NKJ - Red Letter Bible) Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Luke 11:4 The Lord's Prayer, "And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us..."
Bible Commentary Matthew 6:14, 15 Jesus gives us warnings about for forgiveness. When we don't forgive others, we deny our common ground as sinners (Law Breakers) in need of God's forgiveness. Reference Ephesian 4:32 God does not forgive us because we forgive others, but solely because of His great mercy. As we come to understand His mercy and justice, we will want to be like Him. Having received "Forgiveness," we will pass it on to others. Christ was and is willing to forgive even those who crucified Him. (Luke 23:34) Reflection: It is easy to ask God to forgive us for sins, but difficult to grant it to others. Discussion - Asking ourselves: Have I forgiven the people who have wronged me? Spiritual - Non-material things as distinct from earthly goods. Temporal - Relating to earthly life or secular concerns. Mercy - Compassion shown to an offender. Justice - The practice of what is right and moral. Healing - To make or become healthy or of sound mind.
