MLA Citations Sabrina Moreland

Parenthetical and In-Text Citations "In MLA style, in-text citations, called parenthetical citations, are used to document any external sources used within a document (unless the material cited is considered general knowledge)" (LEO). Direct the reader to the full information about the source found in the Works Cited Page. You must have a parenthetical citation for direct quotes, summaries, and paraphrases.

Citing Print Sources You will use the Author-Page method for each citation. For example (Smith 87). You must pay attention to the type of print source you are using and how many authors or editors are responsible for the work. Multiple Authors Authors with same last name No Author Listed

Citing Electronic Sources The in-text citation must include the first item that matches the Work Cited entry (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name). If the author’s name is present, use the author’s last name in the parenthesis. For Example: (Smith).

Citing Electronic Sources Continued If there is no author, use the title or part of the title with quotation marks in the parenthesis. For Example: (“Robert Frost”). If there is no author or discernible title, use the name of the sponsoring website. For example: (The Mark Twain House and Museum).

Citing Electronic Sources Continued Do not give paragraph numbers or page numbers unless they are available. If you must list the website name to direct the reader to the appropriate entry, do not include URLs in the text. Only use partial URLs. For example: MSN.com (not http://www.msn.com). Poets.org (not http://www.poets.org).

A Few Examples… Sataloff, Robert T. "Academic medicine: a training gap." Ear, Nose and Throat Journal Aug. 2012: 306+. General OneFile. Web. 01 Oct. 2013. “Following receipt of a doctorate of medicine, most physicians pursue postdoctoral training. This training is usually 4 to 8 years in duration” (Sataloff 306).

Examples Continued… “Engineer.” Wikipedia. 8 Oct. 2012. Web. 01 Oct. 2013. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineer. Engineering involves developing solutions for social, technical, and economic issues by employing mathematical and scientific knowledge (“Engineer”).

One Final Example… Roth, Veronica. Divergent. New York: Katherine Tegen Books, 2011. “It must require bravery to be honest all the time” (Roth 62).
