MLA Citations Created by Paula Timmins

What is a MLA citation? A citation is the information about the sources that you used in your research. MLA which is the format we use that was created by the “Modern Language Association”.

Book with two or three authors Author’s Last name, First name (1 st listed), and First name and Last name (2 nd listed). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Print. Thomson, Melissa and Ruth Dean. Women of the Renaissance. Farmington Hills: Lucent Books, 2005.

Book - Editor Editor’s Last Name, First name, ed. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Print. Andrews, John, ed. Shakespeare’s World and Works. New York: Charles Scribner, 2001.

Online Database Author. “Article Title.” Title of Original Publication. Date Published. Title of Database. Web. Date of Access. Myers, A. R., ed. "The Black Death, " English Historical Documents. London. Routledge History Study Center. Web. 12 July 2011.

Online Database – no author Sometimes an author is not listed. Start your citation with the title. "British society and culture, " History Study Centre. ProQuest LLC Web. 12 July 2011.

World Wide Web site (Web) Author (s). “Article Title.” Web site title. Website publisher/sponsor, (if no publisher, put N.p.) Date created/updated. Medium of publication. Date of access. Vallieres, Sarah. “Tudor Succession Problems.” Sixteenth Century Renaissance English Literature. Luminarium, 18 June Web. 12 July

Works Cited Page The final page of your paper with a list of all of the sources you used. Center the words “Works Cited” on the top. Double space Use a hanging indent No extra spaces between sources

In-text citations It is used to document a source within your work. Why use in-text citation? It acknowledges your source and makes it easier to verify and find specific sources in your research.

Format Enclose the citation in parentheses within the sentence – the period should remain outside the parentheses. (Whitman 64). If you reference the work in the sentence, you only need the page number. (185)

In-text citation Examples Properzia de Rossi was one of the first women artists in Renaissance Italy (Thomson 95). If the authors name is used in the sentence, then cite the page numbers in parenthesis. Others, like Andrews and Barnes (210-15), disagree with this hypothesis.

You will never be able to memorize all of the rules for creating MLA citations. But, luckily you don’t need to because there are lots of resources available to help you.
