Sweet Sixteen By: Brenda Luu Mr. Leingang – Period 4 Science Class

Question How does after running affect shooting a basketball on the free throw line?

Hypothesis As the girls first warm up and shoot free throws then shooting a free throw after running the sweet sixteen will cause the shooter to slack because of the persons energy that is wearing off.

Materials 12 Girls, 1 basketball, a regular gym, 2 basketball hoops, coach

Variables MV: Energy of each person RV: How well the persons can shoot through the hoop CV: Amount of people(5 girls), Amount of running(8 down, 8 back), Height of hoop(10 feet)

Procedure 1.Set up materials. 2.Have all five girls stand on starting line. 3.Coach will blow whistle when ready. 4.All girls run down to the end line and slap the line and yell out the number of laps they have ran. 5.Repeat step four when running back. 6.The total laps should be sixteen laps. 7.After everyone is done running, Line up on the free throw line. 8.Have the first person shoot towards the hoop. 9.Repeat steps 7-8 for trials Two and Three.

Background Info Basketball is a popular ball that Americans use. The game of basketball includes many different moves, Either with your body or just the ball. Such as shooting, dribbling, and bouncing. When it has been bounced, it sounds nothing like any other ball. You will never forget the sound. First, Facts on the basketball. The basketball was first invented in 1891 by a man named James Naismith. In Springfield, Massachusetts he was a teacher at a YMCA training school. James Naismith, under the direction of American physical education specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball. Women and men hold similar gender stereotype about emotionality. Emotionality is typically associated with women, people believe that women are more emotional than men with the basketball. The sweet sixteen is just running down and back the end line sixteen times.

Abstract The purpose of my project is to see if running effects the energy to shoot a basketball on the free throw line. What I believed that would happen before the test is more than half of the girls will make their shots. After collecting the data, some sources of error that could have affected my data are people not trying to shoot the ball or not running the whole sweet sixteen laps. I have learned that running does affect shooting a free throw.

Conclusion I thought that if the girls first warm up and shoot free throws then shooting a free throw after running the sweet sixteen will cause the shooter to slack when attempting to shoot their free throws. My results showed that I was right. I can prove this because before the girls ran the sweet sixteen, Nine girls made their shots. After the sweet sixteen, Six girls did not make any of their shots. This supports my original hypothesis. Therefore if the girls first warm up and shoot free throws then shooting a free throw after running the sweet sixteen will cause the shooter to slack because of the persons energy that is wearing off.
