HOW TO SELECT SOURCES When performing a search on LexisNexis ® the first thing that you need to do is to choose the type of research that you would like to conduct, for example a case law search or a case analysis search.

Together, We Can Once you have determined the source for your research, the next step will be to enter the key words that you wish to search in the Enter Search Terms box, then click on the [ Search ] button. (See example below)

Together, We Can HOW TO VIEW DOCUMENTS: CITE CITE (citation) is the default view. This view method will provide all documents or cases pertaining to your search as a list of citations.

Together, We Can FOCUS SEARCH LexisNexis ® offers features that enable users to refine the search to make the result more accurate and precise.

Together, We Can Type in additional keywords which are more precise and specific. E.g. Medical Negligence and Doctor’s Duty. Then, click [Focus] button.

Together, We Can Terms and Connectors LexisNexis® offers lists of connectors which you can use throughout your searches.

See tables below for brief descriptions and example. ConnectorsExamples AND Links words or phrases that must appear together in the same document, no matter how close or far apart. Example: medical AND malpractice OR Links synonyms, antonyms, alternate forms of expression, etc. Broadens search results. Words separated by OR will appear in any of the documents returned, but not necessarily in the same document. Example: breach OR violate OR infringe W/N Locates search terms within a certain number (N) of words of each other. Does not specify word order. Example: evidence W/2 act (read: act within two words of evidence) *N is numeric number starts from 1 to 255 W/S Looks for documents with search words in the same sentence; cannot be combined with the W/N. Example: infring! W/S freedom of speech W/P Looks for documents with search words in the same paragraph; cannot be combined with the W/N. Example: medical negligence W/P hospital

Together, We Can Wild Cards WildcardsExamples Asterisk (*) Use the * to replace a single or multiple letter in a word. You can use up to seven in the same word, anywhere in the word except as the first letter. e.g: wom*n finds both “women ” and woman” e.g: Ahm*d finds both Ahmad or Ahmed Exclamation Point (!) Use the ! to replace an infinite number of letters following a word root. e.g : insur! = insure, insured, insurance, insurer e.g : charg!= charging, charges, chargeable, charged

Together, We Can SEGMENT SEARCH Segment Search allows you to conduct a search within several headings. Among some of the most commonly used segments are Name, Catchwords, Court or JudgementBy.

Together, We Can Once you have clicked on the [ Add ] button, you will be able to see the selected segment and the judge’s name in the [ Enter Search Term ] box 4 Then, click on the [ Search ] button to retrieve the results. 5

Together, We Can Select the Type of treatment. For e.g. Positive Treatment is for cases that have followed or affirmed a particular case. Enter the Case Name (s) 1 2 3

Together, We Can Once again choose the appropriate source before conducting the search

Together, We Can Type in the key word and click the search button to retrieve the results. Please take note that the search techniques are the same through out the left panel menu. E.g, Journals, News and etc.

If you need the full document, click on Full, if you only need the citations click on Cite. 4 5 Next, check the document range and the formatting options 6
