Mission: Develop, deliver and support the technology tools for teaching and learning, research and development, outreach, and policy development of the Mathematics and Science Teaching Institute programs. The Most-Asked Question Why does hot water freeze faster than cold water? An Answer: If hot water is close to 100º C., and plenty of space is in the freezer, some of the hot water would vaporize and be removed from its container thus reducing its mass. With less mass it’s rate of freezing would be faster. If the container was metallic and smooth, there could be significant thermal contact with a metal freezer shelf. The water in the bottom of the container would cool relatively rapidly, possibly allowing the hot water to freeze faster than the cold water. Mission: Provide Colorado and Wyoming educators with free assistance on their mathematics and science questions regarding content and pedagogy. The focus of TLC is the study and implementation of educational technologies in the classroom, laboratory, through the web and other distance learning technologies. Lori Reinsvold Director Jane Brown Coord. of Curriculum/ Web Administration Offerings Develop, deliver, and support online graduate courses in mathematics, science, and education Become more productive users of Microsoft Office tools – Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access Explore Internet resources for content learning – MarcoPolo – supported by American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, National Council of Economic Education, Nation Endowment for the Humanities, National Council of English Teachers (NCTE), International Reading Association (IRA), National Geographic Society Use handheld systems, such as the Palm Sire 71, in teaching and learning – collecting data, interfacing with physical, biological, chemical sensors (Vernier), organizing graphical and text observations, developing interactive assessments Develop Web pages for interactive learning (Composer, Dreamweaver, Blackboard) Explore Inspiration for concept mapping Explore Intel’s Seeing Reason, a free interactive mapping software tool. This software provides interactive workspace for investigating cause and effect relationships in complex systems. Current efforts include developing and adapting technologies for effective teaching and information dissemination in different settings and to different public entities (e.g., age, culture, SES, and geography). A successful outreach program, the MAST Hotline (mast.unco.edu/hotline), provides a free resource service for mathematics and science K-12 teachers. Workshops and courses are provided by the staff in the areas of critical technology skill development and technology integration in teaching and learning ( Current funding is provided by the QWEST Advancement for Technology Literacy Endowment, National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Education, Colorado Commission of Higher Education, and Colorado Department of Education, and Colorado Partnership for Educational Renewal. The Hotline was begun in a UNC summer workshop for new science and math educators who were invited to call in for assistance to their questions. Initially funded by a Title II grant, Colorado Alliance for Science, the Colorado Council on Higher Education, and others. The Hotline is now supported by UNC’s College of Arts & Sciences. Sue Kamal Coord. of MAST Hotline Offerings Free 800 number resource service for practicing and pre-service teachers Complete and updated web resources, e.g., calendar or events, math and science resource links, list of Hotline’s library resources An electronic newsletter with sample questions, articles by educators, and calendar of events
