EUM/OPS/VWG/11/0361GEWEX/GlobVapour Water Vapour Workshop Issue 1 05/03/2011 Providing data for climate monitoring Past and current satellites and programmes: Meteosat: since 1977, second generation since 2002 EPS/Metop: since 2006 Jason-2: since 2008, continuing Jason-1 and TOPEX Poseidon New and future programmes: Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) EPS-SG Jason-3 Operator for ESA/EC Sentinels-3, -4 and -5 Taking into account requirements and principles of the GCOS Climate Monitoring Principals related to: - calibration, characterisation, continuity, consistency and sustainability - Together with a long-term planning with a horizon until Meteosat Transition Programme (1 st generation) Meteosat Second Generation EUMETSAT Polar System Jason OST Mission

EUM/OPS/VWG/11/0361GEWEX/GlobVapour Water Vapour Workshop Issue 1 05/03/2011 Water Vapour observations for climate MFG, MSG, MTG all have 6.3  m channel, creates time series from 1982 – 2038; MSG and MTG have 7.3  m channel, creates time series from 2004 – 2038; MTG-I will have 914 nm channel and MTG-S has on IRS 800 channels in LWIR (700 – 1210 cm-1 or 14.3 – 8.3 µm) and 920 channels in the MWIR (1600 – 2175 cm -1 or 6.25 – 4.6 µm); Metop carries IASI, IR spectrum 4-50  m that is planned to be continued with IASI-NG on EPS-SG until 2040; Metop continues NOAA HIRS observations available since 1979 until Metop-B to be launched in 2012 (after HIRS can be constructed from IASI); Metop continues NOAA AMSU-B observations with MHS, this mission has highest priority for EPS-NG; Metop continues GOME/Sciamachy record with GOME-2 until ~2020, GMES-5 is planned to continue this series; Metop contributes with GRAS to the network of RO missions. EUM/OPS/VWG/11/0361GEWEX/GlobVapour Water Vapour Workshop Issue 1 05/03/2011 Plan for MVIRI and SEVIRI Infrared Intercalibration Use inter-calibrated HIRS from NOAA/NCDC (adjusted to HIRS on NOAA12) with GSICS collocation and inter-calibration procedures taking HIRS as truth; Control intercalibration using ARSA (Analyzed Radio Soundings Archive) database from LMD; Control intercalibration in overlapping areas after IODC start, e.g., Met-5 vs. Met-7; Derive AMV and other parameters from inter-calibrated radiance and document changes. Deliver both FCDR data and corrections to be applied by expert users (SAFs, ECMWF reanalysis); Need to implement common cloud detection (need one for both); Development and implementation targeted for 2011/2012; Longer Term: Implement inter-calibration based on IASI (based on GSICS and collaboration with projects in the NOAA CDR program)). Estimate potential and feasibility of further improving MVIRI level 1.5 by reanalysing the image archive. Slide: 7

EUM/OPS/VWG/11/0361GEWEX/GlobVapour Water Vapour Workshop Issue 1 05/03/2011 EUMETSAT Climate Data Records Overview (~next 3 years) Aim for combined FCDR for Meteosat series (MVIRI, SEVIRI homogenised radiance record); Aim incrementally for FCDRs for all Metop instruments (first records using latest operational algorithm version are called interim FCDR); Aim to support NOAA STAR/NCDC FCDRs for all NOAA heritage instruments on Metop (AVHRR, HIRS, AMSU-A/B, MHS); Aim at consistent radio-occultation data (bending angles) back to 2001 from GRAS, CHAMP, GRACE and COSMIC sensors; TCDR production aims at ECVs plus typical data for assimilation in atm. reanalysis as Atmospheric Motion Vectors (MVIRI, SEVIRI, AVHRR); FCDR and TCDR production is performed within the distributed ground segment, i.e., at Central Application Facility (CAF) and Satellite Application Facilities (SAFs); Supports specific international activities as WMO (GSICS, SCOPE-CM), ECMWF Reanalysis, WCRP (GEWEX Radiation Panel Reprocessing and Assessment), ESA- Climate Change Initiative.
