Habitats  To understand what a habitat is, and how this affects the organisms that live there.
Desert Animals. What is a desert? The desert is a land of extremes: extreme heat and extreme dryness; sudden flash floods and cold nights. Because deserts.
Hot and Cold deserts. What is a hot desert like? A desert is a dry habitat that gets very little rain. They are hot during the day and cool at night.

Climate On Earth

Come let’s now find out more about The Desert Region.

The Desert Region

Hot or Tropical Cool or TemperateCold Desert of the Tundra Cool or temperate Hot or Tropical Cold desert of tundra Types of desert A desert is any barren land that has less than 25 cm of annual rainfall.

Location of deserts

Can you identify the Tropical Deserts?

CLIMATE  High temperature during the day  Low temperature during the night  Clear Skies- Sand heats and cools quickly  Dry Winds -Scanty Rainfall  Sandstorms

CLIMATE

VEGETATION  Lack of water, dry winds and high temperature makes it difficult for plants to grow  Plants have adapted to the environment. Some adaptations are: a) Long roots in search of water – Acacia b) Roots spread far and wide but just below the surface of the ground – Cactus c) The leaves are modified into spines- Cactus d) Stems are broad and green and perform the function of the leaves - Baobab

WILD LIFE  Animals survive the drought and the heat through various adaptations.  The camel is known as the ship of the desert.

The camel has some features that has helped it to survive in the desert. These are: a) It stores fat in its hump which can be broken down to provide water and energy. b)It has double eyelids and long eyelashes to protect its eyes from the sand. WILD LIFE- desert animals

c) The camel has the ability to close its nostrils to prevent sand from getting into the nose. d) It has padded feet to walk on the sand without sinking. e) It has fur that traps a layer of air. This helps to keep the body cool during the day and warm at night.
