Your mission We think St. Tammany deserves better. The library board needs your help to articulate a vision of library service for St. Tammany Parish in the 21 st Century: –How should St. Tammany’s library system grow? Are there “peer” libraries for the library to emulate? How does future growth support current long-range plans? –How should the library system be configured in the Parish? Main or “co-main”? Regional or community libraries? What is the appropriate mix? –What defines a “main” or a “co-main” or a “regional” or a “community” library? –How large should the branches be? –Where should branches be located?

How do we get there? Review existing resources and information –Demographic, political, economic conditions in the Parish today and in the year 2015 (New Directions 2025) –Local library use trends –Peer library comparative benchmark analyses –Other data sources??? Develop alternate service scenarios –Simultaneous focus on the Parish at large and its individual communities –Type of branches –Number of branches –Distribution of resources Estimate space needs based on resource distribution models Recommend the optimum facilities scenario(s) to the Library Board

Space needs assessment calculations Establish the design population Projection of population (20 yrs preferred) Accommodate extended service population Collection space 10 volumes per square foot Periodical 1.0 titles per square foot Periodical 0.5 square feet per title per year retained Nonprint 10 items per square foot Patron computer network 50 square feet per station Reader seating space Allow 30 square feet per reader seat

Space needs assessment calculations Staff work space Allow square feet per work station Meeting room space General meeting 10 square feet per seat (plus 100 square feet for a presenter) Conference 25 square feet per seat (plus 10 square feet per seat in gallery) Children’s programming square feet per seat (plus 80 sq.ft. for a presenter) Computer training 50 square feet per seat (plus 80 square feet for a presenter)

Space needs assessment calculations Special use space Add the allocations for collection space, reader seating space, staff work space, and meeting room space Divide that total by a factor ranging from 4 (which produces a generous allocation) to 6 (for a minimum allocation) Nonassignable space Add the allocations for the first five types of space Divide that total by a factor ranging from 3 (for a generous allocation) to 4 (four a minimum allocation) Add all six allocations for a space needs estimate tailored for your library
