Cycles of Matter Ch. 5 sec. 2 Water Carbon Nitrogen Phosphorus

All living things need:  Water  Minerals  Other compounds  95% of an organism is made of  Oxygen  Carbon  Hydrogen  Nitrogen

 What is the difference between ENERGY FLOW and CYCLES OF MATTER?  Energy flows one way! (open system)  Matter recycles again and again! (closed system)

 Matter is neither created nor destroyed, just reused in different forms of life and the physical environment.

 Biogeochemical cycle: chemicals cycle through the biotic and abiotic parts of the Earth.

An Outhouse for the Sea

The Water Cycle  Water cycles between atmosphere, land, and ocean.  Condensation - gas to liquid  Precipitation - liquid or solid falls  Evaporation - liquid to gas  Transpiration - evaporation from plant leaves  Runoff – water running off land  Groundwater – water under ground  Percolation (infiltration) – water soaking into ground

The Carbon Cycle  Combustion - burning (combining C w/ O 2 )  Cellular respiration – breathing out CO 2  Photosynthesis – plants take in CO 2 and give off O 2  Decomposition – bacteria give CO 2 off when they break down dead organisms.

The Nitrogen Cycle  N 2 gas is “fixed” into ammonia (NH 3 ) by bacteria.  Plants absorb N and animals take in N when they eat plants. (makes muscle)  Ammonia from waste is converted back to nitrite and then nitrate by bacteria.

New Nitrogen Cycle Research

The Phosphorus Cycle  P makes up ATP and DNA  P in soil and rocks dissolves in water and is absorbed by plants as nutrient.  Animals eat plants and get P  Dead animals return P to soil

And so it keeps on cycling!
