Commentary Writing The “vocabulary” of writing

Literary Techniques - Review Imagery, denotation, connotation, allusion, irony, understatement, hyperbole, paradox, simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, symbol, tone, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia Allegory, foil, foreshadowing, motif, theme, inference (infer), consonance, satire, rhyme, rhythm, analogy, oxymoron, characterization, point of view, setting, diction, anthropomorphism, antithesis, flashback, stereotype, protagonist, antagonist, parody, suspense, inversion, parallelism, tragedy, tragic flaw, realism

Examples in The Crucible Choose the best scene chosen by a member of your group. At the top of your slide, identify the location of the passage for the class to find. In the body of your slide, type at least 2 quotations that illustrate 2 writing techniques. Label the quote with a term

Page Abigail - Middle “It were a fire you walked me through and all my ignorance was burned away” –Metaphor; Compares her affair with Proctor to a fire (fire represents danger and risk). “As bare as some December tree” –Simile; Uses “as” to compare how obvious it was that all of the “good people” were complete hypocrites. “I used to weep for my sins when the wind lifted up my skirts; and blushed for shame because some old Rebecca called me loose.” –Irony; In the end she becomes a prostitute. Theme – Abigail’s love for Proctor

Page 87 -Bottom Danforth “I live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world.” - Metaphor- comparing the weather/ time of day with the simpler time and mood around town. Danforth is proving that he is need in town to route out the “evil” (witches). “Now, by God’s grace, the shinning sun is up, and them that fear not light will surly praise it.” – Symbolism- because it shows the power of the court. The authority being the light trying to help the people. If they don’t “praise” them now they will thank them later Theme: Court is the light and is there to save the people from the evil that has come into the town.
