2 Definitions  Rhetorical Devices - techniques used by a writer or speaker to heighten the effect of the writing  Figurative Language - speech or writing that departs from literal meaning in order to achieve a special effect or meaning, speech or writing employing “figures of speech”

3 The basics…  Diction – word choice  Tone – the attitude of the writer towards the subject  Mood – the audience’s feelings toward the work  Style – the manner in which the author expresses his point through language  Point of view – it’s the point of view (you know this already right?)
