Why should I care about accessibility? Blindness There are approximately 10 million blind and visually impaired people in the United States, about 3 out of 100. There are approximately 93,600 visually impaired or blind students, 10,800 of whom are deaf-blind. Using screen readers on an accessible web page, a blind person can access the same information as a sighted person.
Why should I care about accessibility? Hearing Loss & Deafness Your chances of experiencing hearing loss by age 65 is 1 in 3. The web is a major way for deaf and hard of hearing persons to communicate. Why should I care about accessibility?
Portability – accessible content transfers more easily to PDAs, cell phones, etc. Consistency makes your design user-friendly. Accessible web pages simplify understanding for all users, whether or not they are disabled. For example, have you ever used your mouse to hover over a button or graphic to get a better idea of what it represents? How does the average user benefit?
