1 Building your class website
While maintaining ADA Compliance

2 ADA definition of disability
A person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment or a person who is perceived by other as having such an impairment. Read this. Then discuss the various types of disabilities. Physical and mental impairments. These impairments can be termed as a disability of the person to do his or her day to day activities as previously. Can be broken into sub-categories such as Mobility and Physical Impairments, Spinal Cord Disability, Head Injuries/Brain disability, Vision Disability, Hearing Disability, Cognitive or learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and invisible disabilities.

3 What is Website Accessibility
In a nutshell, website accessibility means that people with disabilities can access the web. This means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and they can contribute to the Web. It can also benefit older people due to changing abilities that come with aging. Equal Access Equal Opportunity

4 Assistive Technologies
Screen readers Screen magnification software Text readers Speech input software Alternative input devices such as head pointers, motion tracking or eye tracking, and single switch entry device This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA Screen readers: Used by blind or visually impaired people to read the content of the computer screen. Examples include JAWS for Windows, NVDA, or Voiceover for Mac Screen magnification software: Allow users to control the size of text and or graphics on the screen. Unlike using a zoom feature, these applications allow the user to have the ability to see the enlarged text in relation to the rest of the screen. This is done by emulating a handheld magnifier over the screen. Text Readers: Software used by people with various forms of learning disabilities that affect their ability to read text. It will read text with a synthesized voice and may have a highlighter to emphasize the word being spoken. They do not red things such as menus or types of elements – they only read text.

5 Common problems and solutions in website accessibility
Problem: Images without text equivalent. Solution: Add alt text or text equivalent to every image. Problem: Documents are not posted in a accessible format. Solution: Always provide documents in an alternative text-based format, such as Rich Text Format or PDF. Text-based formats are the most compatible with assistive technologies. When using Word products, use the built in accessibility checker.

6 Common Problems and solutions continued
Problem: Specifying colors and font sizes. Solution: Avoid dictating colors and font settings. Users need to be able to manipulate color and font setting in their web browsers and operating systems to make pages readable. Problem: Videos and other multimedia lack accessible features. Solution: Include audio descriptions and captions (closed captioning). Other considerations: Minimize blinking, flashing, or other distracting features.

7 Identifying Web accessibility issues
Use the WAVE tool to detect errors. This is a free online tool that can help you evaluate your page for accessibility. Navigate without a mouse. To test this, use the Tab key to navigate through links and forms and the Enter key to perform an action. (Shift + Tab to go backward) If you can’t get to what you want, or if your cursor gets trapped, the page has accessibility issues. Zoom a page and enlarge text. Other recommendations: Check videos for captions. Look for links with generic link text such as “click here” or “more info.” Replace with more descriptive link text.

8 Identifying Web accessibility issues
Watch a short video on identifying web accessibility issues.

9 Today’s Goals Add a Links Page for two different purposes: Useful Links and Word/PowerPoint Add a Content Page and discuss various ways this can be used for posting homework assignment as well as Word and PowerPoint presentations. Use the WAVE tool to check for accessibility in the pages we built If time allows: Use the built in accessibility checker in Word and PowerPoint. 1. Go to SCS and log in
