Pre-AP for All: Maintaining the Standard with Rigorous Support Ted Moore, Lovejoy ISD Superintendent Dennis Muizers, Lovejoy ISD Asst. Superintendent C & I College Board Forum February 1, 2008

What is Lovejoy? Opened first secondary program (grades 6-9) in Fall 2006 Currently offer grades 6-10 with pre-AP in the four core subjects and AP Computer Science and AP World History for 10 th graders Next year will have 11 th grade and AP Courses in: –US History –Calculus –English Language –Biology –Chemistry –Computer Science –Psychology Opportunity to set new norms Lovejoy—unique summer professional development opportunities

Message to the Community Texas curriculum (TEKS) is college preparatory College readiness and ability grouping information If a student is college bound, then we should plan for at least one AP course prior to graduation The school will respond to student academic differences by ratcheting up the level of support instead of lowering the standard Communication plan must be structured and multi-faceted

Non-Negotiable Beliefs/Attitudes for Staff “We are not through teaching until they have all learned” Teachers must develop a mental model of the standards and work collaboratively to ensure effective instruction We must know what students have learned and what they have yet to learn, then we must intervene to ensure student learning

Lovejoy Unique Summer Professional Development Experience Weeks of July 21, 28, and August 4 $75 per day for most sessions which includes all materials, lunch and break snacks “Because They Are All Our Kids”
