The Bible The Bible is our instruction book for the best way to live our lives. It has detailed instructions about how we should treat our parents. God gave His people the Ten Commandments to live by them. Honor your father and your mother is the fifth commandment given by God. It comes before “you shall not kill” this means that the Lord regards this commandment as a very important one.

How should we treat our Parents? We should treat our parents with:  Love & Kindness  Obedience & Respect  Support

Love & Kindness Jesus is our greatest example of love. He always showed love even when people did not show love in return. Our parents love us and have our best interest at heart. If our parents love us and Jesus told us to love even our own enemies we should always show a great amount of love to our parents. “A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother” (Proverbs 10:1), “A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother” (Proverbs 15:20)

Obedience & Respect The fifth commandment is HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER. The commandments are laws, not optional, that we should obey. Remember to always obey your parents is pleasing to Jesus. When you obey your parents don’t say ‘uh fine!’ be respectful say okay mom okay dad. Be loving in your words.

Support –Our parents do so much for us and don’t ask back for anything. So if your parents need something from you or, when they are older, need you to provide for them you should support your parents. “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8) –Remember there are two days a year to show your parents how much you love and respect them. They are mother’s and father’s days. Maybe make them breakfast, make your bed… go the extra step to show them that you care.

Rewards of honoring our parents Honoring your father and your mother is the only commandment out of the Ten Commandments that is followed by a promise, “Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Deuteronomy 5:16).

Rewards of honoring our parents God promises a reward “that your days be long” This proves to us how important it is for God that we obey this commandment. Also have you ever gotten a good feeling when you’ve done something nice for someone, a peaceful feeling. When we honor our parents every one is happy, you are happy your parents are happy and most importantly you make God happy.

Consequences of disobeying this commandment When we disobey our parents through words, actions, thoughts, or even looks, we are disobeying God as well and just as there are rewards for treating our parents with respects there are punishments for treating them with disrespect. It is written in the Bible: “And he who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death” (Exodus 21:15)

Consequences of disobeying this commandment “And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death” (Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) “He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother is a son who causes shame and brings reproach” (Proverbs 19:26) “The eye that mocks his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it” (Proverbs 30:17)

A Final Thought No one ever said it would be easy to obey our parents but we should look at Jesus as our example in the Wedding in Cana Galilee, didn’t He turn water into wine? Who asked Him to do this? It was Saint Mary, Jesus Mother, right. So then look at Jesus. He loved His enemies, and respect his parents. We should also love and respect our parents as well.
