1. The Weighty Principle You who fear the LORD, praise Him; all you descendants of Jacob, glorify [kaved, ] Him, and stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. 13 1. The Weighty Principle 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, (Romans 1:28-30) 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, (Romans 1:28-30)

1. The Weighty Principle 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:31-32) 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:31-32)

2. The Parent’s Weighty Position “‘A son honors [kaved] his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the LORD of hosts…” (Malachi 1:6)“‘A son honors [kaved] his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the LORD of hosts…” (Malachi 1:6) “You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:32)“You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:32)

4. The Weighty Penalty The eye that mocks a father and scorns a mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it. (Proverbs 30:17)The eye that mocks a father and scorns a mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it. (Proverbs 30:17) 15 “He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death… 17 He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus 21:15, 17) 15 “He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death… 17 He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus 21:15, 17)

4. The Weighty Penalty 8 “You shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. 9 If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother, his bloodguiltiness is upon him.” (Leviticus 20:8-9) 8 “You shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. 9 If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother, his bloodguiltiness is upon him.” (Leviticus 20:8-9)

4. The Weighty Penalty 18 “If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, 19 then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. 20 They shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear.” (Deuteronomy 21:18-21) 18 “If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, 19 then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. 20 They shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear.” (Deuteronomy 21:18-21)

Putting it into Practice Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her rejoice who gave birth to you. (Proverbs 23:25)Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her rejoice who gave birth to you. (Proverbs 23:25) A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1)A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1)

5. The Perpetual Principle Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Proverbs 23:22)Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Proverbs 23:22) A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Proverbs 15:20)A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Proverbs 15:20)

5. The Perpetual Principle A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children. (Proverbs 13:22)A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children. (Proverbs 13:22) … children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. (2 Corinthians 12:14)… children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. (2 Corinthians 12:14)

5. The Perpetual Principle 3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God... (1 Timothy 5:3-4) 3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God... (1 Timothy 5:3-4)

5. The Perpetual Principle 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever… 16 If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed. (1 Timothy 5:8, 16) 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever… 16 If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed. (1 Timothy 5:8, 16)

5. The Perpetual Principle 1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ (Matthew 15:1-4) 1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ (Matthew 15:1-4)

5. The Perpetual Principle 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9 ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’” (Matthew 15:5-9) 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9 ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’” (Matthew 15:5-9)

Exceptions to the Rule? Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. (Colossians 3:20) “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Exceptions to the Rule? 5 “…Why then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?” 6 Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, “As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death.” (1 Samuel 19:5-6) 5 “…Why then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?” 6 Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, “As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death.” (1 Samuel 19:5-6) “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me…” (Matthew 10:37)“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me…” (Matthew 10:37)

Exceptions to the Rule? The 5 th commandment requires that I show honor, love, and faithfulness to my father and mother and to all who are set in authority over me; that I submit myself with respectful obedience to all their careful instruction and discipline; and that I also bear patiently with their failures, since it is God’s will to govern us by their hand.” (Answer 104) The 5 th commandment requires that I show honor, love, and faithfulness to my father and mother and to all who are set in authority over me; that I submit myself with respectful obedience to all their careful instruction and discipline; and that I also bear patiently with their failures, since it is God’s will to govern us by their hand.” (Answer 104)

Jesus, the obedient Son 51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. (Luke 2:51-52)

Jesus honored His mother 25 …But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. (John 19:25-27) 25 …But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. (John 19:25-27)

Jesus redeems our disobedience Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE.” (Galatians 3:13)Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE.” (Galatians 3:13)
