WASTE RECYCLING IN SEVILLE OUR WORLD IS NOT AN INHERITANCE FROM OUR PARENTS, BUT A LOAN FOR OUR CHILDREN 1

Recycling is a process where the materials are processed into new materials that are used again. Also recycle is to use a product for anything other uses than those for which it was manufactured. Recycling reduces the effect of waste on the environment, as it prevents thousands of tons of them go to landfill, enabling its use and valorisation. What is recycling? 2

In Seville... The municipal company Lipasam is responsible for waste collection in this city. Lipasam can collect recyclable waste like paper, cardboard, cans, glass, packings, batteries and other waste more difficult to process like paint, inks, electronic waste and more. 3

How does Lipasam work? Everyday, Lipasam’s Garbage Trucks go through all the streets collecting garbage. Other way to collect garbage is by pneumatic collection (underground conduits) and Recycling Points. A boat collects garbage from the river bottom. Lipasam also is responsible for cleaning the city. 4

Packaging container Glass container There are 4,598 containers of packagings in Seville. The collection of these products is carried out through the use of modern vehicles with crane open box. There are 1,734 glass containers in Seville. Each ton of recycled glass saves more than 1000 kg of raw materials and over 100 kg of oil. 5

Paper and cardboard container. There are 1,995 paper/cardboard containers in Seville. One ton of paper involves: -Savings of 0.4 hectares of forest. -Decreased 60% energy. -Water savings of 85%. Organic container To deposit food scraps, objects and non-recyclable waste. The organic material deposited in this container will be converted into compost. 6

Battery container. Batteries should never be thrown away. One single battery can pollute severely. Oil container. Used oil can mix up the water creating serious health and pollution problems. You have to place them in a plastic bottle tightly closed. 7

Recycling Points Recycling Points are places where can be deposited either difficult to recycle waste or dangerous residues : batteries, paint, electronic waste, rubbles… Lipasam installed four Recycling Points in Seville. 8

Organic materials are subject to two types of processes: WASTE TREATMENT: ORGANIC MATERIALS. Anaerobic process Biomethanisation Aerobic process. Composting Composting is the biological transformation of organic materials into humus. These products are known as compost and they are used as fertilizers. It is an artificially accelerated biological process that takes place in the absence of oxygen or total organic substrates. 9

WASTE TREATMENT: Glass Glass containers can be recycled without losing any of the material properties. Once collected they are crushed to form a coarse powder called cullet, which is subjected to high temperatures in a furnace. Afterwards it is melted to be molded again in the form of bottles, flasks, jars, etc… The process saves raw materials and a lot of energy. 10

WASTE TREATMENT: PAPER AND CARDBOARD. It is the recovery of cellulose fibers in aqueous solutions by removal of the surface-active substances that are incorporated in order to remove the ink. The ink stays on the surface of the bath and can be separated easily. After, they are passed through rollers that flatten and compact. Finally the output is recycled paper sheets. 11

THINGS WE CAN DO AT HOME : At home the rubbish should be classified in different bins: the paper, the organic, the glass and the plastic one. There are original ideas that we can carry out at home to reuse those things and to give them another use.. RECYCLE? IT IS YOUR CHOICE Tip! The plastic can be used as a flower pot stand 12
