Taiwan Creativity Development Association International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) IEYI in Taiwan, R.O.C. September 24 – 27, 2008 Hosted By: Taiwan Creative Development Association (TCDA –

TCDA Why International Exhibition for Youth Inventors??

TCDA Purpose & Goal Promote innovative, creative thinking skills and attitudes in young generations Develop problem-solving, critical thinking and scientific concepts in young generations Exercise, apply, and extend knowledge, and generate practical solutions to real world problems Prepare young scientific talents for future technological industries and global economical opportunities Provide a vibrant, exciting arena allowing young generations to imagine and create freely Expand the youth’s international horizons

TCDA Origin  1904: Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII) was established ( )  2004: JIII celebrated its 100 th anniversary & initiated International Forum of Youth Invention (IFYI) ( The 1 st annual International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) was held on August, 2004 at Tokyo, Japan  2005: Malaysia  2006: India  2007: Indonesia  2008: Taiwan  2009: Nigeria  2010: Vietnam  2011: Thailand

TCDA Requirements for Participation (1) Each invention or device must be created by the youth. The youth is defined as ages 6 to 19 years old. The youth must be enrolled in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools or vocational high schools and NOT in colleges or universities. This means that the participant must currently be registered as a school student. Note: The level of each applicant's creativity is naturally expressed differently according to age. Inventions and devices of all kinds that are created by youth in a wide range of ages (6-19 years old) are all welcome. (2) Enrollment of every project team is limited to 3 members in the youth category. (3) Inventions are NOT for the purpose of artistic beauty display or scientific research report. Each invention or device submitted should meet the following two basic criteria:  Creativity and originality from a technological perspective.  Apparent advantage or benefit to human living

TCDA Requirement for Display (1) The invention must be able to be set up for display & exhibition. Materials for inventions may be chosen freely. However, we cannot accept objects constructed from materials that are fragile, dangerous, likely to decay/rot, or involve living animals or plants. (2) In the case that an invention should be a computer program or any material that is not easily understandable in its basic form, the youth should prepare a presentation allowing the judges and attendees to understand. Examples of such presentations include models that show the invention's purpose and function or a display board illustrating its content. (3) The submission itself should not exceed one meter in height, length, and depth or ten kilograms in weight. In the case that an invention or device should exceed the size limits as outlined, it may be substituted with a displayable model that clearly expresses its purpose and function. If the youth wishes to submit a piece exceeding any of the maximums, the matter must be explained to and approved by the hosting organization beforehand. (4) The youth should provide a clear explanation of the purpose, developing process and operation of invention.

TCDA Awards (1) Intra-National Awards (for countries with at least 8 teams) One for Outstanding Creative Award within the nation One for Teamwork/Engagement Award within the nation (2) Inter-National Competition Top 20% of the participating nations will all be awarded with the Best Presentation Awards based on the overall presentation of the display booths presented by the nation (3) Excellent Invention Awards Category A: In the Field of Application and Contribution Environmentally Friendly Inventions Safety and Health Promotional Inventions Social Welfare Inventions Recreational and Educational Inventions Category B: In the Field of Technique and Creative Expression Mechanical Structural Design Material Utilization Cost Effectiveness & High Benefit Inventions Marketability Notes Each invention can only be given ONE award from these Excellent Invention Awards Top 20% of the inventions for Category A and top 10% for Category B will be all awarded Additional Overall Popularity Awards judged by visitors & participating inventors.

TCDA Judging Criteria ItemPercentage Safety of Invention20% Problem Finding & Solution Process20% Creativity & Uniqueness40% Completeness of Data20% Total100%

TCDA Invention Awarded – Example Environment Friendly Award Age Level: ? Name of Invention: Electronic Incense Stick Rewarding Concepts: Design in line with environmental protection & waste recycle Benefit to the Environment: acoustic vibration; smoke-free; repeated, endless use; energy conservative; environmental safety; healthy and convenient

TCDA Invention Awarded – Example Health Promotion Award Age Level: Middle School ? High School? Name of Invention: Healthy, Environment-Friendly Automatic Juicer Rewarding Concepts: Health and safety are promoted to the better quality of human life Benefit to the Health: healthy, convenient, easy to use, automatic, squeezing efficiency, effective improvement from old, traditional model, high technological integration

TCDA 2007 Social Welfare Contribution Award Age Level: ??? Invention Awarded – Example 3 Name of Invention: Small Nails Sucker Rewarding Concepts: For the convenience of the elderly, the disabled, the old and weak and young children Benefits: Magnets do the job; one-hand operated; materials easy to get; affordable, economical, easy to assemble, safe and sure to catch

TCDA 2007 Social Welfare Contribution Award Age Level: ??? Name of Invention: Security Socket Power Supply Rewarding Concepts: For the convenience of the elderly, the disabled, and young children. Benefits: Secured power supply, immediate danger notification, artificial intelligence, electricity is safely Controlled at all times, humidity prevention, human friendly science and technology integration. Invention Awarded – Example 4

TCDA 2006 Social Welfare Contrition Award Age Level: High School Invention Awarded – Example 5 Concepts: For the convenience of the elderly, the disabled, and young children Name of Invention: Traffic Light Control System for Giving Ambulance Priority Pass Benefit: Unlimited internet communications; time efficient for urgency

TCDA 多功能安全圓規-台北市雨聲國小、景興國小、板橋市海山國小 2007 ? ?? Award Age Level: Elementary School Rewarding Concepts: Drainage hole covered with plastic film that will prevent cockroaches & any bug from the drainage into the house. Name of Invention: Pest Control Drainage Hole Cover Benefits: Avoid having hair fall into drains in the shower, causing obstructed water pipes. Can be easily cleaned or replaced to clear the drainage Applicable to general drainage holes, do not have to specially made, low cost. Invention Awarded – Example 6

TCDA Invention Awarded – Example ??? Award Age Level: Middle School Name of Invention: Multi-Functional Field Baton Rewarding Concepts: Compared to a traditional one, this multi-functional baton carries many distinctive features and add more practical value for its use in the field. (1) A metronome was installed, so the runners can be adjusted in accordance with the metronome of their running speed. (2) The baton was installed with the fluorescent light, so that the computer operation may accurately reflect the posture of the runner and further correct the runner’s posture for best performance (3) The batons can be connected to the mainframe. Every runner’s condition and the gap of time among runners may all immediately appear on the stadium Score Bulletin, which the audience finds more exciting. (4) East and simple to operate; convenient to carry. Attention!! Girls can be excellent inventors!! How exciting!!

TCDA Invention Awarded – Example ??? Award Age Level: Middle School Name of Invention: Walkman Tape Cutter Rewarding Concepts: Cost for this tape cutter is much cheaper than the traditional stand. The design is most convenient for students to put in pockets and carry for classes and to be used in open spaces for activities. This invention is the most creative due to its cutter design. First, the tape is inserted into the ring from the bottom and goes through the hole with the adhesive facing the cutter. Whenever the tape is pulled up, the gap becomes the leading edge of a force. Once the tape is pulled back, the cutter will glide it back to another location. The cutter only requires two hands to complete a complex task. Controlling the length of tape is also quite convenient. When the tape runs out, do not discard the cutter. It can be removed and loaded onto a new roll of tape to continue its use, in line with the concept of environmental protection.
