Presentation transcript:

Future City and Engineering By: Doug and Aarika Harris

Table of Contents  Types of Engineers and what they do.  How "Future City Engineers" would build their "city“ (what things can be found in SimCity like airports, schools, etc)  What other people would do to benefit the city (city planners, zoners, teachers, police/fire, mayors, landscape architectures, etc).  A few slides on some engineering approaches we came up with.

Aerospace Engineering  Definition:  Aerospace engineering deals with the whole field of design, manufacture, maintenance, testing, and use of aircraft for both civilian and military purposes  Things they can design/do:  Design stealth bombers  Design Boeing planes  Design air-propelled weapons  Design rockets  Design satellites  Design space shuttles

Biomedical Engineering  Definition: These engineers help to blend medicine and engineering to create new materials and devices for the human body.  What they do:  Design new mechanical hearts  New plastics to repair holes in the skull  Better artificial limbs  Ouch-less needles  Devices to deliver medicine to a very specific part of the body  Small cameras to look inside the body

Chemical Engineering  Definition: Branch of Engineering concerned with the design, construction, and management of factories in which the essential processes consist of chemical reactions.  What Chemical Engineers can do:  Ensure cleaner environment by designing better manufacturing processes  Create cleaner fuels to power cars  Create the formulas for paints, house-hold chemicals…the industrial possibilities are endless! Source: Encarta Encyclopedia

Civil Engineering  Definition and what they can do: One of the oldest and broadest engineering fields. Deals with the creation, improvement, and protection of the communal environment, providing facilities for living, industry and transportation, including large buildings, roads, bridges, canals, railroad lines, airports, water-supply systems, dams, irrigation, harbors, docks, aqueducts, tunnels, and other engineered constructions.

Electrical/Computer Engineering  Definition: Electrical/Computer Engineering is concerned with the development and design, application, and manufacture of systems and devices that use electric power and signals.  What they do:  Design circuits  Computer design  Superconductors  Medical imaging systems  Robotics  Lasers  Radar  Consumer electronics  Fiber optics

Nuclear Engineering  Definition: Branch of engineering concerned with the design and construction of nuclear reactors and devices, the use of nuclear material to power space vehicles, radiation medicine, and researching.  What they can do/Where they can work:  Palo Verde!  Any nuclear power plant  Hospitals  Research labs  Nuclear research/development labs  Military  Government

Mechanical Engineering  Definition:  Engineers in this field design, test, build, and operate machinery of all types; they also work on a variety of manufactured goods and certain kinds of structures. The field is divided into:  (1) Machinery, mechanisms, materials, hydraulics, and pneumatics  (2) Heat as applied to engines, work and energy, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning  Where they can work:  Chemical, nuclear, aerospace, manufacturing, and industrial plants (just to name a few)  NASA, Six Flags, Dow Chemical, Ford, Military, pretty much ANY engineering job!

“Future City Engineers” and SimCity  There are many options available for your cities.  It is important in the beginning to know what features are not available – such as pools, elevators, rocket launch pads, and others.  By using SimCity, explore EVERY option that is available and write them down on paper.  Like airports, museums, casinos, residential housing, colleges, subways, water piping, power lines, parks, and much more.  It is very important to not leave anything out! You don’t have to use everything in SimCity; it’s just good to know what’s available to use.

What other professions can add to your city:  Police – safety, law enforcement, and prisons.  Fire – fire protection  Landscape Architecture – green areas, trees, parks, plants, etc.  Teachers – elementary, high school, and college education.  Zoning – set zoning laws for commercial, residential, and industrial areas.  Mayor – That’s you! It is important to listen to the needs of your city.  Waste Management – In charge of landfills and recycling.  Accountant – in charge of the city’s cash flow and expenses.  City workers – keeping the city beautiful and providing bus and subway transportation.

Engineering Approaches and Ideas We Came Up With:  Importance of scale  Knowing the reasons behind the design of your city  Record keeping  Scheduling and time management  Quality over quantity  Make sure your city can score well on the Rubric Score Sheets before building or writing the essay  Study Score Deduction Page to make sure your design will not lose many points  Study the sample judges questions and be able to answer most, if not all of them.

The Bottom Line: Score Points, Learn, AND HAVE FUN!
