LITTER IN MARSHALL Presented by: Tom Hoff and Melinda Kawalek

Marshall was officially recognized by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency as a “Step One GreenStep City” on April 26, A Marshall GreenStep Business Recognition program was established in January A "Step 2 GreenStep City Award" was presented to the City of Marshall on June 20, To reach our goal of becoming a “Step 3 GreenStep City” by 2016, Marshall must meet 16 of the 28 Best Practices.

The City of Marshall submitted an application for a Minnesota GreenCorps member in May Melinda Kawalek was appointed to work with City staff and the Marshall GreenStep committee in September Melinda has been working on several goals since September. The most recent goal is to: Develop a Best Management Practice (BMP) to prevent the build-up of plastic bags and other materials that litter the fences, ditches and waterways in Marshall.

Next Steps The Marshall GreenStep Committee requests that the Marshall City Council approve of the formation of a task force (including the Chamber of Commerce, private businesses and landowners) to develop and implement a Best Management Practice to reduce (eliminate) the blowing of litter into the lots near Pizza Ranch and Menards.
