Enjoying Reading and Summer Fun Disfrutando la lectura y el verano Santa Maria-Bonita School District

The Importance of Summer Reading La importancia de leer en el verano Prevent the “Summer Slide” Evitar el resbalo de verano Maintain skills, even improve Mantiene y mejora las destrezas Summer slide affects millions of children each year in this country-but it doesn't have to. To help prevent children from losing ground to summer slide, RIF has compiled a variety of activities that parents, caregivers, and members of community organizations can use to keep learning fun throughout the summer break. Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward. According to the authors of a November 2002 report from Johns Hopkins Center for Summer Learning "A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year.... It's common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

Evitar el resbalo del verano Prevent the Summer Slide Evitar el resbalo del verano Read every day Lee a diario Visit the library Visita la biblioteca Lead by example Sea un ejemplo Talk it up Anime la lectura verbalmente Have plenty of reading material Tenga suficientes materiales para leer Read aloud Lea en voz alta

Six Books to Summer Success 6 libros para el exito de verano 6 books to prevent regressing 6 libros para prevenir el retraso Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right—not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child’s age, interests, and abilities. Libraries often run summer reading programs that motivate kids to read, so find out what available in your area.

Read Something Throughout the Day Lee algo durante el dia Morning: Temprano newspapers, comics, periodos, caricaturas Daytime: Durante el dia schedules, TV guides, magazines, recipes, online resources horarios, guias de la tele, recetas Evening: Por la tarde picture or chapter books Libros con fotos Morning: The newspaper- even if iti isjust the comics of today’s weather. Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc. For example, if your daughter lilkes the food channel, help her look for a recipe on the newtwork’s web sites – then cook it together for more reading practice Evening: end the day by having your child read to you from the book he is currently reading. Have him rehearse a paragraph, page or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help him be more fluent—able to read at an appropriate speed, correctly and with nice expression.
