… Demystifying Prerequisites and Credits

LEED OVERVIEW CERTIFIED, SILVER, GOLD or PLATINUM: Based on the accumulation of credits. A LEED ® Certified project must meet the prerequisites and the design team shall specify the credits applicable to the project The design team will implement procedures and specify methods or products to meet individual LEED ® credit requirements LEED ® status does not require the use of specific credits – any and all of them count.

LEED ® Prerequisites… …Impacting Duct Systems

PREREQUISITE 2 – Duct must comply with ASHRAE SECTION – Duct and Plenum Insulation All ducts must comply with Tables A and B Duct can be wrapped or internally lined Internal liner is often used for acoustical attenuation only Engineer must specify correct insulation Certain climate zones require R6 and R8 insulation. Most standard insulation is 1” 1.5 PCF which is nominal R4. To meet this prerequisite, the correct liner must be specified by the engineer. Buried duct used for the heating and cooling supply requires R4 insulation except Climate 8, which requires R6. Ducts used for only heating or used only for cooling are subject to less stringent requirements. At this time most direct burial duct is not insulated. Water infiltration can be an issue.

PREREQUISITE 2 – Duct must comply with ASHRAE Section Ducts and Plenum Leakage All duct work over 3.0” w.g. must meet leakage Class 6 for rectangular duct and Leakage Class 3 for round and oval duct. This duct leakage must be designated on the drawing and tested in the field. Transverse seams must always be sealed – this includes all gores of adjustable elbows Eastern Tight ® transverse seams are always sealed! All longitudinal seams must be sealed except: Spiral Seams! Exhaust in unconditioned spaces or outdoors Supply duct < 2.0” w.g. in conditioned spaces Return duct in conditioned spaces

PREREQUISITE 1 – Airstream surfaces must comply with ASHRAE Section – Resistance to Mold Growth This section does NOT require the application of anti-microbials to any surface. The requirement is that all airstream surfaces are resistant to mold per ASTM C1388 or UL 181. All duct liners used by ESM meet this requirement. Blanket type fiberglass used by ESM also meets this requirement. Sheet metal surfaces and fasteners are exempt from this requirements (62.1 pg. 6) NOTE: “Even with this resistance, any airstream surface that is continually wetted is still subject to mold growth” (62.1 pg. 6)

PREREQUISITE 1 – Airstream surfaces must comply with ASHRAE Section – Resistance to Erosion Duct liners used by ESM meet this requirement Sheet metal surfaces are exempt from this requirement 62.1 pg 6 ESM can supply test data showing that dual wall duct, with blanket fiberglass insulation, covered with a perforated inner shell meets this requirement without the use of additional barriers. Duct liner, which is tested for erosion, behind a perforated inner shell meets the requirement without further testing. This section does not, by itself, require the use of Mylar, Tedlar or other barriers

PREREQUISITE 1 – Ducts must comply with ASHRAE Section – Protection of Duct from Moisture “When recommended by the manufacturer, building materials shall be protected from rain and other sources of moisture by appropriate in-transit and on-site procedures.” (62.1 pg. 17). ESM ships in van body trailers to meet this requirement. Protection on-site and removal of visible microbial growth are the responsibility of the on-site contractor.

PREREQUISITE 1 – Ducts must comply with ASHRAE Section Compliance with Other Standards SMACNA HVAC DCS NFPA 90A NFPA 90B Applies to the installation of duct only ESM strictly adheres to industry standards

PREREQUISITE 3 – Minimum Acoustical Performance (Schools Only) To provide classrooms that are quiet so that teachers can speak to the class without straining their voices and students can effectively communicate with each other and the teacher. ESM can provide acoustically lined and dual wall duct to assist the designer in achieving lower noise levels

LEED ® CREDITS Impacting Duct Systems …Or Not!

CREDIT 4 - RECYCLED CONTENT and CREDIT 5 - REGIONAL MATERIAL Table 1. MR Credit Metrics (pg. 337)

CREDIT 4 RECYCLED CONTENT “Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components cannot be included in this calculation” v3.0 pg 369 CREDIT 5 – REGIONAL MATERIAL “Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components must not be included in this calculation” v3.0 pg 379

CREDIT 1 - OPTIMIZE ENERGY PERFORMANCE Engineer must demonstrate energy savings via whole building model. Alternatively, the engineer may follow prescriptive path based on building type. Engineer must specify actions to achieve these requirements. Round and oval duct meet leakage Class 3 while rectangle duct only meets Class 6 (2x the leakage). Engineers should consider greater use of ESM round and oval duct systems.

CREDIT 3 and 3.1 – CONSTRUCTION IAQ MANAGEMENT PLAN This section does not anticipate the use of the cleanliness levels of SMACNA “DUCT CLEANLINESS FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION”. (DCNC) During construction, meet the control measures of SMACNA “IAQ GUIDELINES FOR BUILDINGS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” Chapter 3. Note: These are on-site requirements only. “The contractor SHOULD protect … and seal all duct and equipment openings with plastic.” (pg. 455) Note: This section applies to duct as it is installed. No requirement is created for wrapping duct work prior to shipment. The design team may want to specify a cleanliness level as outlined in the DCNC publication as part of a comprehensive IAQ management. ESM will be glad to provide the service as properly specified.

CREDIT 4.1 – LOW EMITTING MATERIALS – ADHESIVES AND SEALANTS “All adhesives and sealants used on the interior of the building (defined as inside the weatherproofing system and applied on-site) must comply…” (pg. 471) Comply with South Coast Air Quality Management (SCAQMD) Rule #1168 and VOC table. Schools (pg 472) must meet California Department of Health Services Standard Practice for the testing of Volatile Organic Emissions from Various Sources Using Small-Scale Environmental Chambers, including 2004 Addenda. Only sealers supplied by ESM for field installation are covered by this section.

CREDIT 4.2 – LOW EMITTING MATERIALS – PAINTS AND COATINGS Most Buildings “Paints and coatings used on the interior of the building (defined as inside the weatherproofing systems and applied on-site) must comply…” (pg. 481)  Green Standards GS-11, GS-03 and SCAQMD Rule #1113 Only touch up paint as supplied by ESM for field use is covered by this section. Schools – same California standard as adhesives/sealants

CREDIT 9 – ENHANCED ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE Schools Only STC 35 and 40 dbA background noise ESM round and oval spiral ductwork provides superior sound attenuation, compared to rectangular ductwork. ESM dual wall ductwork provides additional sound attenuation. ESM can provide test data for ESM dual wall ductwork for the design team to use.

CREDIT 10 – MOLD PREVENTION Also schools only Design to limit relative humidity to < 60% Limiting mold is best achieved by limiting moisture There is no requirement for the use of anti-microbial coatings The use of anti-microbial coated steel can be considered by the design team as part of this credit. ESM can provide material with a Microban ® precoating or ESM can provide other, ESM applied, coatings such as Portersept ®

LEED requires no changes to the normal production of ESM. It is the design teams’ responsibility to correctly specify insulation requirements by system Lined duct must be protected from moisture in transit and on the job site – ESM ships ductwork in closed van body trailers, protected from the weather. This prerequisite does not require wrapping at the factory ESM Submittals are not required for  Recycled Content  Regional Materials  Adhesive, sealant and VOC except when supplied for job site touch up.

The use of low leakage ESM round and oval duct should be used as part of achieving EA C1. Eastern Tight ® and Eastern Flanges are important tools for meeting Class 3 Leakage. The use of ESM lined and dual wall duct exceeding the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 should be encouraged as part of EA C1. The use of ESM lined and dual wall duct do provide better acoustical performance than unlined and single wall duct and can also be part of achieving IEQ C9 for schools. ESM can provide anti-microbial coatings as part of a mold prevention plan for IEQC10 ESM can wrap and clean ductwork prior to shipping as part of a comprehensive IAQ Management plan for IEQ C10
