Genre: Fantasy never A fantasy is a story that could never really happen. As you read, decide which events in this story could never happen in real life.

Summary In late summer, a farmer hits a man in the road with his truck. The speechless stranger then spends several weeks on the farm. The weather stays warm into autumn, and the leaves around the farm remain green. The stranger realizes something is wrong. he leaves the farm, and the weather returns to normal.

Comprehension Strategy –Ask Questions Good readers ask themselves questions as they read. This helps focus reading because they are looking for answers. Asking questions is especially helpful when looking for causes and effects. Ask yourself, “Why did this happen?” to find a cause. Ask, “What happened because of this?” to find an effect.

Recognizing Action Verbs Write the action verb and label it as mental or visible. 1.The posse drove the bank robbers out of town. 2.I learned that song in kindergarten. 3.Some people worry about everything. 4.A nurse held the baby up to the nursery window. 5.Mom jogs two miles every morning. 6.The secretary filed the letter in the wrong drawer. 7.Paul often sleeps for twelve hours straight. 8.Our dog chased the squirrel up that tree! 9.We appreciated Kristy’s kindness. 10.The mayor worried about the voter’s reactions.

Linking Verbs A linking verb is a verb that connects a word at or near the beginning of the sentence with a word at or near the end of the sentence. In English, the most common linking verbs are forms of be. Examples: Doris is the winner. We are the losers. He was glad.

Identifying Linking Verbs Step One: Find the verb. Step Two: Find the subject. Step Three: Find the link. The link will either rename or tell a condition of the subject. Example: Mrs. Hughes was happy about the promotion. I am the winner!

Multiple-Meaning Words Many words have more than one meaning. To decide which meaning of a word is being used, look for clues in the surrounding sentences or paragraph. Use context clues, experience, and word order to decide on the correct meaning of a multiple-meaning word.

Linking vs. Action Step One: Identify the verb. Step Two: Replace the verb with am, are, or is. Step Three: If the sentence still makes sense and links two words in the sentence together, the verb is linking. If the sentence does not make sense, the verb is action. Examples: I felt so tired. I felt the soft, fluffy pillow.

Action vs. Linking Write the verb in each sentence and identify it as action or linking. 1.The kiss turned the handsome prince into a frog. 2.The vegetables tasted salty. 3.Archie tasted the snails after a little hesitation. 4.Fred smelled the flowers. 5.The star always grows nervous before a performance. 6.The bridge looked sturdy enough. 7.The crowd became restless. 8.The grass turned brown during the drought. 9.This milk smells sour. 10.Dad stayed at home with the children.

Day 3 - Question of the Day Since the stranger’s visit, how is fall on the Bailey farm different from nearby farms?

Review Questions 1.From the story, name at least one event that could not really happen? 2.How is the stranger different from most people? 3.Give a clue that the weather should have started to change? 4.How can you tell the stranger was not a hermit?

What are some effects the stranger’s visit had on the Bailey farm? What is the most important? Why did the pumpkins grow larger than ever? How can you tell the stranger continued to care about the Baileys? What might have happened if he had stayed with the Baileys?

It was so hot that the crops began to wilt and die.

What to look for… On the next slide, there will be several sentences. Number your paper from one to six, then find the verbs! First: Write the verb phrase…remember to include helping verbs. Second: Dissect the verb phrase. Figure out whether verbs are action or helping.
