Part 5 Investing for Fun

Task B The team of investment consultants for which you are working for intends to launch a new product, a managed portfolio worth £100,000, for a fee of £1,000. For this fee, the investor will be provided with: Full management of their portfolio Full access to their current portfolio investment & structure A summary of their portfolio value over time Monthly Summary Reports on their portfolio

The CityComment Website Your group will provide a single response to this task. The method we will use to manage the portfolio of shares is the Virtual Trader section of the CityComment website:

Registering with CityComment You will need to register at least one member of your group with CityComment. This requires an address in the UK, such

Your Share Portfolio You will find that you can create a share portfolio to up to the value of £100,000. The good news is that you cannot lose any real money. The bad news is that you do not get any of the profits you make either.

Buying and Selling Before you decide which shares to buy you will need to explore the website. You will find records of share values over the past 12 months.

Carrying Out the Task (B ) The task has several sections: B3.1 asks you to create a portfolio. You should do this today. B3.2 asks you to manage it on a weekly basis. This will need to be continued during December and January. B3.3 asks you to Investigate Share Investment Strategies. This can be started today, but will also need to continue during December and January B3.4 asks you to communicate with each other in order to manage the portfolio and record decisions. Again this will be carried out during December and January.

Carrying Out the Task (B3.5) The final part of the task requires you to create a spreadsheet which can be used to track the portfolio over a period of time. It should have two sections: 1.A Fund Management Section where all records are kept (a database) 2.An Investor Query Section which investors can use in order to check on the progress of their investment. This activity needs to be started today, but may require some time to be spent during December and January to complete it.

Completing the Task (B4) In Liverpool in February, you will be given some time to complete this activity, and be asked to make a brief presentation of you portfolio and of the spreadsheet toll you have devised in order to manage it effectively.

Activity Sessions You now have the rest of the day to complete the work outlined above, and to complete any ongoing work from the previous task. You should prioritise Task B3.1, and then ensure that you have completed tasks A3 and A6.
