Checking on the Calculator: Open the scratchpad by clicking » Select the graph tab of the scratchpad On the entry line which says f1(x)= key in x 2 -5x-24 Press · The graph should appear on the screen; you might need to change the viewing window, but you need to see the x-axis from -10 to 10 for most of the problems so it should default to that. Now you want to find the roots, which is where the graph crosses the x-axis so continue on to the next page!

Click the b button (shown in RED) and a drop-down menu appears on the screen as shown here: From the drop down select “Analyze Graph” or press 6.

Another menu appears, and you need to select option 1, “Zero,” or press 1 and ·.

The screen changes to a pointing finger and a vertical line, which you will move with the touchpad or the arrow keys to the left of where the graph crosses the x-axis at one point. Press ·. This give s the calculator the lower bound of the interval to find the zero.

You then will get a screen with the lower bound set, asking you for the upper bound. Just slide the pointing finger to the right of the point where the graph crosses the x-axis and again press ·. The ROOT is the x-value of the point displayed!

Now you need to repeat the process all over to find the other root, which is on the right side.

After you solve the equations and find the roots algebraically, you should check your work on the calculator, especially if you think you made a mistake!
