The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a measure for human body shape based on an individual's weight and height.

Body mass index is defined as the individual's body mass divided by the square of their height. mass (kg) (height(m)) 2

Category BMI range – kg/m2 Very severely underweight less than 15 Severely underweight from 15.0 to 16.0 Underweight from 16.0 to 18.5 Normal (healthy weight) from 18.5 to 25 Overweight from 25 to 30 Obese Class I (Moderately obese) from 30 to 35 Obese Class II (Severely obese) from 35 to 40 Obese Class III (Very severely obese) over 40

BMI range – kg/m2 Health Risk 27.5 and above High risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes 23.0 to 27.4 Moderate risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes 18.5 to 22.9 Low Risk (healthy range) 18.4 and below Risk of developing problems such as nutritional deficiency and osteoporosis

BMI can be calculated quickly and without expensive equipment. However, BMI categories do not take into account many factors such as frame size and muscularity. The categories also fail to account for varying proportions of fat, bone, cartilage, water weight, and more.
