 Project Overview & System Integration Ted Liu June 11th, 2004 Fermilab, High Rise, Hornet Nest Pulsar Meeting

Lots done since March meeting Fiber splitting is working for all paths  still need active splitter for RECES (see Chris’talk) RECES/Cluster inputs working with beam, PulsarMon design in place (see Vadim’s talk) LVDS splitting is working for all paths  no blue wire on Fanout boards! Most firmware in places for all paths (Tx & Rx)  fine tuning starts (see Sakari’s talk) Pulsar production/testing success !  all hardware in place (see Burkard’s talk) TS  L1A  Pulsar Merger Tx  CPU  L2TS Pulsar  TS  L2R/A loop closed! (see Cheng-Ju and Kristian’s talk) Control CPU and Algorithm CPU communication software in place (see Daniel and Kristian’s talk) New VME DAQ readout code in place (see Jane and Burkard’s talk) Pulsar crate almost FULL  platform for integration in place (see Burkard’s talk) …

Using Pulsar SVT Rx to measure SVT/SVX timing (lemo inputs: flexibility of Pulsar AUX card) SVT in From modified VTM: signal to indicate SVX data activity Lemo cable New Pulsar SVT Rx firmware/AUX card can measure the leading and trailing edge times for both SVT input (SVX data) and SVT output… Beam tests on going….. Important for SVT upgrade and overall L2 performance SVT pipelineSVX/SRC Can also measure intermediate stages

Are you ready for the summer integration? These two are ! head shaved & cabled up

Key to success: coherent team effort ! Beam Tests MonitoringFirmware Coordinator: Burkard “In God we trust, everything else we test with beam” Coordinator: Vadim “In God we trust, everything else we monitor” -- FBI Coordinator: Ted “In God we trust, everything else we simulate” Weekly plan will be made at Tuesday weekly meetings (Trailer 171 E, 3-4:30pm) Progress reports at Friday bi-weekly trigger hardware meetings

Key to success: coherent team effort ! Beam Tests MonitoringFirmware all beam test requests coordinated with trigger SPLs Train system experts now pager carrier, rotate weekly setup web page with instructions … see Burkard’s talk Have all monitoring code ready for all subsystems next month setup web page with details filled by experts set goals for the coming months … see Vadim’s talk We are moving from the age of firmware into the age of monitoring software … firmware is not a place to show how smart one is, rather how many mistakes one can make and how fast one can fix them !

Goals before Aug. shutdown put system together take enough beam data in parasitic mode a few runs in decision making mode have enough system data to chew on during the shutdown (or long beam abort gap)

Challenges in system integration So far we have done the simple part, the part we know for sure that needs to be done and how to get it done we may encounter some unknowns during commissioning: either we don’t know about them yet but they are out there waiting for us (like fiber splitting problems back in March), or problems created by us along the way… More often than not, those are the toughest ones and you will have most of the fun solving them… Be prepared !

A few comments Everyone in the group is proud of the Pulsar board … What I am really proud of are the young people on this project … We have the best young people I have seen, EVERYONE of them Even though some could only work on Pulsar part time so far, Productivity / hour spent : VERY high for everyone Talent  Great performance Can we have a working system running in parasitic mode before shutdown in Fall 2004 ? Our young people have the answer ! Note that the youngest Pulsar soldier will arrive next Monday ! Her name is Angie Little, our summer student

2003 PCB Technology Leadership Award I have saved this bottle for all of you, for a party later this year …

Pulsar Party my house KHz? Tonight we will open this bottle instead… Chinese “Vodka” Happy B-day, Burkard! Daniel has designed Pulsar L2 to only have 2 states: Thirsty or Drunk
