Device Control over the Internet APIs – Powerful, flexible – Tools, concepts, structures all specific to the manufacturer… – …so manufacturer must support the app developer Can we reduce the support effort? XML schema – Can accomplish similar same thing(s) as an API – Can be a common framework for most functions – API can be reserved for “extensions” to XML capabilities – Eliminates some manufacturer support time

XML Schema Structural layout of an XML document, with its constraints and contents Constraints are grammar, data types, rules E.g., “an element can have only one datatype” Schema sets the rules for passing data to control the device

API docs tools Mfg support developer tools API docs Mfg support APP Current Approach APP

developer APP tools Mfg support Live link to Model- specific XML XML docs Mfg support Live link to Model- specific XML XML docs Concept Approach

The Extents What it is: – For app-device communications (messaging, services) – Suitable for “core” features (mfg may have own “added value” features not exposed to XML) What it is not: – Not for device-device communications – Not to install, configure, bind a device to its native network – Not a replacement for manufacturer’s own app / control methods – Not a security protocol (but compatible with secure systems)

Info Types Sample Datatypes: – Device name – Device model#, serial #, and other identifying information – Manufacturer information – Manufacturer Logo – Native network(s) supported (ZigBee, Z-Wave, WiFi, BT, etc.) – Services (on, off, dim, temp setting, etc.) – Ratings (1000 watts…) – Messages, data types, ranges, etc., supported – Native network profiles supported (e.g. ZigBee light switch, Z- Wave thermostat, etc.)

Purpose of Discovery Group To bring manufacturers together to review – Concept – Existing work and specs – Opportunities And to decide on “next steps”
