 Represents publishers in all fora  Annual Publishing Survey (e.g. 2013)  Policy/Legislation inputs in copyright, arts and culture, education, VAT issues etc.  Promotes literacy and reading  SA Book Fair - 31/07-2/08 Turbine Hall, JHB  Participation in Legal Deposit committee of Department of Arts and Culture (DAC)  Coordinates export missions of small publishers to London and Frankfurt Book Fairs with DTI support

2013 Annual Publishing Survey  Total industry income: R4.6 billion  Trade: R797 million = (17.2%)  Education (schools): R3.2 billion = (69.5%)  Academic (HE): R619 million = (13.3%)

Of the R4.6 billion income:  Local product: R4.5 billion  Book export sales: R58 million  Local publishing rights: R4 million  Foreign publishing rights: R2.5 million  E-books sales: R36 million (previous year was R5 million)

Year on year rate of change in total income  Trade (decrease): -2.4%  Education (increase): 25.2%  Academic (decrease): -8.3%  Total 16.6%

 E-book market to continue to grow  Publishing industry expected to contract for some time due to:  policy/legislative changes – e.g. “one textbook policy”  increasing impact of e-books  decline in spend by Higher education students  Possible growth of industry will rely on growth of e-books market, exports and imports etc
