Environmental Labels and Declarations It establishes the principles and procedures (product categories, product environmental criteria and product function characteristics) for assessing and demonstrating compliance (certification procedures) to award a label Type I ISO 14024 It deals with all environmental claims voluntarily made for products and therefore self-declared Type II ISO 14021 It establishes principles and procedures for issuing quantified environmental info about products, based on life-cycle data, presenting the environmental performance of a product (EPD) Type III ISO 14025

EPD is a report of environmental sustainability related to a product Type III ISO 14025 EPD  is a credible and transparent tool for communicating the environmental impact of any type of product EPD is a report of environmental sustainability related to a product EPD is based on a qualified certification body green audit EPD is developed setting up LCA studies according to ISO standards( verified by an independent third party) and SEMCo program EPD is a unique and comprehensive statement of a product’s environmental impact, considering its creation, distribution, and use to disposal FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Type III ISO 14025 EPD  is a verified document that reports environmental data of products based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and other relevant information and in accordance with the international standard ISO 14025 (Type III Environmental Declarations) The International EPD® System is a programme for Type III environmental declarations, maintaining a system to verify and register EPD®s as well as keeping a library of EPD®s and PCRs in accordance with ISO 14025 FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Type III ISO 14025 To Create an Environmental Product Declaration according to the International EPD® System consists in the following steps: Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Perform LCA studies based on PCR Compiling environmental information in the EPD reporting format Verification and Certification Registration and publication FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Type III ISO 14025 Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category For comparability, an EPD is based on valid Product Category Rules (PCR) document. If a relevant PCR does not exist, it shall be created. The International EPD® System also includes the possibility for pre-certification of EPDs as a step in the process to develop PCRs. PCR documents already exist for many product groups and are developed continuously. In the PCR database of the International EPD System, available PCR documents and PCR documents under preparation may be found. FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Ecoplasbrick: A PCR relevant for Ecoplasbrick panel is under development and it is expected to be issued by Envirodec (SEMCo) on 1st July 2014 FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014 The revision also takes into account the PCR for Construction products and construction services (CPC 54), which serve also as PCR basic module, and EN 15804 standard (Core rules for the product category of construction products) FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

If YES – to update LCA according to this final PCR Type III ISO 14025 Draft PCR (for insulation material) is waiting for the CPC code specific for this topic Once PCR will be approved and published the next step is to check if Ecoplasbrick panel is covered by the final PCR: If YES – to update LCA according to this final PCR If NO – a new draft PCR specific for the Ecoplasbrick product will be created FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Type III ISO 14025 Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Product Category Rules (PCR) PCR are documents that define the rules and requirements for EPDs of a certain product category They are vital for the concept of environmental declarations according to ISO 14025 as they enable transparency and comparability between different EPDs based on the same PCR Companies can participate in PCR development and provide comments on PCRs available on open consultation FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Type III ISO 14025 Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Product Category Rules (PCR) PCR documents shall be developed in an internationally-accepted manner based on open, transparent and participatory process by: Companies and organisations in co-operation with other parties, such as branch and interest organisations Institutions involving LCA experts in close cooperation with companies or branch and interest organisations Single companies or organisations in case they have the necessary in-house competence or choose to engage outside LCA/EPD experts FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Type III ISO 14025 Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category Product Category Rules (PCR) Developing PCR is a procedure containing the following phases: Initiation phase Preparation phase Consultation phase Approval and publication phase Updating phase FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Perform LCA studies based on PCR Type III ISO 14025 Perform LCA studies based on PCR When creating an EPD, the environmental performance of the product/service shall be described from a life cycle perspective. Collecting LCA data to be included in the declaration is a core activity in the process of creating an EPD with the following for basic prerequisites: To be compliant with ISO standards 14040 and 14044 To follow the general purpose of EPDs, the collection of data, methods and assumptions as per ISO standard 14025 and described in the General Programme Instructions To be in line with the PCRs, for the product category of interest FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Compiling environmental information in the EPD reporting format Type III ISO 14025 Compiling environmental information in the EPD reporting format The common layout of EPDs is usually divided into separate parts, including: Programme-related information Product-related information Content declaration Environmental performance-related information  Additional information Mandatory statements EPD can include other types of relevant information in addition to the LCA-based data FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Verification and Certification Type III ISO 14025 Verification and Certification It is essential for the market acceptance of EPD that the data and other environmental information given are considered reliable and trustworthy therefore the EPD (and its data) should be subject for an independent verification and official registration: EPD Verification (most common alternative): verification of LCA-based data, additional environmental information and the EPD®, conducted by a recognized individual verifier or an accredited certification body EPD Process Certification: verification of an internal organisation process aimed at developing EPD®s according to the General Programme Instructions. Only accredited certification bodies are allowed to certify an EPD Process FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Registration and publication Type III ISO 14025 Registration and publication After verification, EPDs shall be registered and published on the web site. The following documents shall accompany an EPD® application: The final verified EPD® (word or PDF document) in one or multiple languages. If the EPD® document is not available in English, a summary in English with the main content of the EPD® shall also be provided Registration form for EPD® Verification statement in English as provided by the verifier A short product description in English A high resolution picture of the declared product or service The company logotype (only needed in the case of first EPD registration) FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014

Additional Information Type III ISO 14025 Additional Information An EPD is valid for three years after which the declaration must necessarily be revised and reissued When the EPD is published, the logotype of the system may be used A registration fee is to be paid for registration and certification of EPDs and pre-certified EPDs. The annual fee is to be paid per organization, and covers all EPDs registered by that organization FINAL MEETING - Venice, June 19 , 2014
