2. Learning objectives
This lecture will familiarize participants with establishing and implementing a strategy for meeting safety requirements concerning communication and consultation with the public and other interested parties by the regulatory body about the possible radiation risks associated with facilities and activities, and about processes and decisions of the regulatory body.

The authorized party has an obligation to inform:
The public about the possible radiation risks (arising from operational states and accidents, including events with a very low probability of occurrence) associated with the operation of a facility or the conduct of activities , including the results from the safety assessment
Relevant interested parties, through their representatives where appropriate, about decisions with regard to measures for protection and safety
These obligations should be specified in the regulation promulgated by the regulatory body, in the authorization or by other legal means

Req. 3: The regulatory body is required to establish a regulatory system for protection and safety that includes provision of information to (…) parties affected by its decisions and, as appropriate, the public and other interested parties
GSR Part 4 on Safety Assessment for Facilities and Activities
Req. 22, 23 and 24 about safety assessment management
Consideration is to be given to ways in which results and insights from the safety assessment may best be communicated to a wide range of interested parties, including the designers, the operating organization, the regulatory body and other professionals.
Communication of the results from the safety assessment to interested parties has to be commensurate with the radiation risks arising from the facility or activity and the complexity of the models and tools used.

Societal acceptance
is a prerequisite for the implementation of a nuclear power programme.
should be confirmed before major investments and organizational arrangements are made.
for gaining true acceptance, the decision makers and the public should be given an opportunity to gain a realistic and credible picture of the benefits as well as the risks involved, and of the environmental impacts of the operation of the nuclear power plant and the associated activities.
On of these elements is about Transparency and Openness. As explained before, this is a key concept to develop trust and confidence in the regulatory body.
