The Project  The purpose of the project is to create an interactive lesson to review/reinforce the concept of illegal file sharing and its consequences.  Students will identify copyright basics and the legal, technical and personal consequences of P2P file sharing.  The audience is a ninth grade Technology Literacy class.

Learning Objectives-METS The learning objectives in the project are aligned to the METS of Digital Citizenship which include the following:  Identification and discussion of long term affects of unethical uses of technology on cultures and society  Identify ways to protect their technology systems  Discuss and adhere to fair use and copyright guidelines

Copyright Basics  Copyright is the legal right given ONLY to the creator of that work (book, song, play, etc) to reproduce, edit copies, distribute, sell, perform or display it.  The work must be in a tangible form to be protected or copyrighted.tangible

Tangible  A piece of work is considered tangible when it is in a form that can be touched or saved.  Some examples: Books, documents, anything saved to a disk or an audio/video device

Intellectual Property  Intellectual property is a creative idea that comes from your mind. It is intangible. intangible  The best way to describe it would be a “GREAT IDEA”

Intangible  When something is intangible, it means that you cannot physically touch it.  A GREAT IDEA is intangible because you cannot touch it. It cannot be copyrighted.  If you want to protect your work, you must save it physically or electronically.

Your Copyrights  Your work is automatically copyrighted when you put it into a tangible form. You do not need to register it, but it is recommended that you use the © symbol.tangible  If you want to officially register your copyright to protect your work, go to or click on the “How to” button below.

Why Copyrights?????  Protecting creative works keeps the creative juices flowing.  How would you feel if someone took your ideas and used them without giving you credit?? Or even worse….sold them for $$$$$$$$$$$$!

Fair Use  Fair use is the legal exception to copyright. It allows for the “fair use” of copyrighted materials for the purpose of education, commenting, criticism or research.  WARNING: The amount of copyrighted work that you may use is very limited, you must give credit and you may not display the work publicly.

Public Domain  Creative works fall into Public Domain when they are not protected by copyrights. Check out “Is It Protected by Copyright?”  The amount of materials available in the Public Domain is limited.

P2P File Sharing  P2P, or peer to peer, file sharing is the use of software that allows computers to communicate directly with each other.  People with file sharing software can directly access each other’s computer to copy or download files without permission!

Illegal File Sharing Let’s figure out what files are illegal to share and what the consequences might be for our actions. Psst….I have a copy of that movie that just came out. Want to watch it on my computer?

Legal & Illegal File Sharing  It is legal to share files that are not copyrighted.  Illegal file sharing is the electronic transfer or sharing of copyrighted materials such as songs, movies or computer software.
