Every person in the UK throws away four times their own body weight in rubbish per year. Each person in the UK uses about 2 trees worth of paper every year. It’s actually 6!

What’s the QUESTION? Use the questions below to check your work and fill in any gaps...   MATCH THE QUESTIONS TO THE CORRECT ANSWERS. What does the Qur’an, Shari’ah Law (Islamic law) and the Ummah (Muslim community) teach about the environment? Who will NOT get into Paradise (Heaven)? What does it mean to be a KHALIFAH? How do Muslims view their responsibility of looking after the environment? What role has Allah given to mankind? What will happen on the DAY OF JUDGEMENT? How do Muslims view looking after the planet?

OUTCOMES… Grade C All will be able to find questions to answers relating to Islam and the environment. Did you achieve YOUR goal?…

What did you get?… Do not damage, destroy or abuse the natural environment Help conserve natural resources Protect all life forms Avoid greedy use of resources Educate others on how to look after the environment Recycle Support environmental charities and organisations Distribute the earth resources more equally. Stop clip at 4:20 Are these any different to what a NON-RELIGIOUS person would do?

OUTCOMES… Grade C Did you achieve All will be able to describe some ways Muslims can put their beliefs about the environment into practice. Did you achieve YOUR goal?…

The UMMAH THINK- PAIR –SHARE What makes you part of this community? How might the Muslim idea of the UMMAH help tackle environmental problems throughout the world? USE THE PICTURE CLUES TO HELP YOU... Think about a group/community you belong to... What makes you part of this community? ALL Muslims are part of the UMMAH (the Muslim brotherhood). The UMMAH unites Muslims from all over the world as ONE community. This community not only includes Muslims in today's society but all Muslims in the past and future Muslims too! What are the POSITIVES of being part of a community?

All of the Ummah have the same goals so they can work together to achieve them. The Ummah can join together becoming more powerful – therefore things are more likely to get done. Part of the Ummah is future generations so Muslims will want to protect the environment and its resources for them. In being part of the Ummah Muslims will want to share the earths resources equally.

OUTCOMES… Did you achieve YOUR goal?… Grade B Most will be able to explain the significance of the Ummah in looking after the environment. Did you achieve YOUR goal?…

EXAMPLES Remember QUOTES and religious STORIES make FAB exam examples  Don't re-tell a whole STORY but be able to link it to the question and explain its meaning. Try to remember the QUOTE and be able explain its meaning.

Muhammad and water What lesson can Muslims learn from this? When the prophet and his companion were once on a long hard journey, they stopped by a clear stream. It was a hot day and Muhammad's companions immediately went into the water and let it freely splash over them. When they looked up the prophet had taken a small bowl from his carrier and had scooped a small amount to wash in. Amazed the companions asked why. ‘Who gave us these good gifts but Allah and he gave enough for all but we should only take what we need and not waste any part’.  What point is Muhammad making here? What lesson can Muslims learn from this? How could they put this teaching into practice?

Do you agree with this approach? Islamic Relief ensures that, while providing short-and long-term relief for those who are suffering, they do so in an environmentally safe way. Do you agree with this approach? Why might some people disagree with you? Islamic Relief states...’we all have a responsibility to maintain the balance of the earth, especially as disruption between the balance is causing widespread suffering amongst the worlds poorest people.’ What do you think is meant by this statement? Do you agree? Some Muslims join and volunteer for organisations that work for the environment. Organisations such as ISLAMIC RELIEF recognise the link between poverty and environmental care.

OUTCOMES… Did you achieve YOUR goal?… Grade A/A* Some will be able to express an opinion on the link between environmental issues and poverty. Did you achieve YOUR goal?…

PLENARY… Sum up today’s lesson in 30 WORDS or less.
