EPSCoR/NSHE C2 Grant Wrap UP Las Vegas Metro Fiber Ring Upgrade Project Presented By: Ed Anderson and Stanton Gurr 1

Purpose of Project To upgrade the existing southern metro fiber ring capacity from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps in order to enhance backbone network capability for : K-12 and Higher Education Distance Learning Research Medical School Training and clinical programs Cooperative Extension programs State and Local Gov’t./Public Safety Applications 2

C2 Project Implementation Implementation Plan Unanticipated Challenges Lessons Learned Current Overall Status Optical upgrades complete Router upgrades due to be complete by 8/15/12 3

Benefits Gained Increased network capacity to support EHR mandate and rural health clinical programs Full 10 Gbps backbone capacity to the commodity and I2 Internet to support the NSHE research community Added support for K-12 and Higher ed. Internet access and Internet based distance learning capabilities Provides needed backbone capacity to support growing high bandwidth video application and collaboration requirements 4

How C2 Grant Fits Into An Overall Strategy I2/Commodity Internet Upgrades North/South Tie Line Upgrades – leased and dark fiber North/South Metro Ring Upgrades Joint Infrastructure Collaborative Network Development Agreement with NDOT/ITS I-80, I-580, US 395, Reno Metro Fiber – TMCC/DRI, LV Fiber/Conduit Availability Digital 395 Fiber in Carson City Area Nevada Hospital Association Rural last mile broadband enhancements in support of EHR mandates 5

Unfinished Business/Future Opportunities Still only 1 PoP input to southern ring Institution LANS need to be upgraded to take advantage of 10 Gbps backbone NDOT Fiber/conduit availability in LV NDOT/ITS phase 2 and beyond Create a next generation video plan to integrate both traditional video room and mobile video functionality 6

Conclusions NSHE would like to thank EPSCoR for its support to date The current C2 project will be completed on time and on budget Many other collaborative opportunities still exist and NSHE will be looking to EPSCoR to again provide valuable support for some of these collaborative initiatives 7
