Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente was a very respected and loved man, not only for his baseball skills, but for his kind and generous nature.

“ We’ll Never Forget You, Roberto Clemente” Roberto after hitting his 3,000th hit – the first Latin American baseball player to reach this milestone.

This was the front page of the Pittsburgh newspaper after his 3,000 th hit. The applause from the crowd went on for over one minute. Barely 2 months later, Roberto Clemente died in a tragic plane crash. He will always be remembered as one of the best Latin American baseball players ever.

After his death, Roberto Clemente was voted into the baseball hall of fame. Normally, players need to wait 5 years before they are allowed to be in the Hall of Fame. However, because of Roberto Clemente’s talent, he was voted in immediately after his death. This was quite an honor to Roberto Clemente and his family.

Roberto Clemente was also honored by the United States Postal Service. The USPS created a postage stamp with Roberto’s picture on it as a part of their Legends of Baseball series.

A 12-foot statue has been dedicated to the Clemente family and all the Pittsburgh fans in memory of Roberto. It stands in front of the baseball stadium in Pittsburgh.
