In West Africa some people were not as ________ as others. African’s reacted in different ways to the need for many slaves by the slave traders. A few West African _____________ to take part in the slave trade. Some even kidnapped African _______________ while the parents were out __________________.

Some traded people who were already slaves such as _________________ of wars. These Africans didn’t want to trade slaves, but their neighbors who were trading slaves were becoming ____________ and more __________________. They feared these neighbors might try to _________________ them and sell them as slaves.

West Africans taken into slavery faced a long and terrible _______________. They were put in ___________ and marched _________________ of miles to the coast, and many ________ along the way. Others suffered ______________ and died when they reached the coast. Those who survived were marked with hot branding ________ and loaded onto slave ships. Enslaved Africans reacted differently on the slave ships. Some Africans tried to ______ themselves by refusing to eat or jumping overboard. Losing slaves meant losing ___________, so the ships’ captains tried to keep them alive. Slaves who refused to eat were _______________ and their jaws were ____________ open or their lips were burned with _______________. If slaves jumped overboard, the ship’s crew went after them in _________________, and they were whipped when they returned.

Some Africans tied to __________ against the crew. They attacked with knives or pieces of metal or wood they tore from the ship. One slave named _____________________ led a revolt on a slave ship. The slaves killed the _____________ and tool over the ship. Many Africans saved their energy to ________________, were too sick to ____________, or just chose not to resist.

When slaves arrived in the colonies, they were sold to plantation owners at “scrambles” or auctions. Many African families were separated and never saw each other again

If they didn’t understand of resisted, they were whipped, burned, or killed. Slaves worked in fields ____ hours a day planting and picking _________.
