What is… Learner-Centered Instruction

What Is The Goal For A Learner-Centered Course? Making the student more responsible for his/her learning. 1

By creating lessons where students demonstrate their knowledge: By performing a skill. By producing a product, and. By thinking at a higher level. 2 How Do I Maximize the Learning?

Remember: Teaching is NOT Telling! 3 Students need to be engaged in the lesson to effectively learn. How Do I Ensure Effective Learning?

Course material should be LEARNED, not covered! The amount of material does not dictate that you must lecture. 4 How Much Is Too Much Lecture?

Learner-Centered classes motivate 5 students to want to learn, not just get a grade. Do We Get A Grade For This?

Learner-Centered activities encourage: Self-discipline. Motivation to prepare for class. Complete assignments. Better attendance. 6 What Do Students Get From Learner-Centered Activities?

Learner-centered classes encourage: Student Autonomy. Student responsibility for their learning. Students to link new information to existing information. Students to think critically. 7 What Do Students Get from Learner-Centered Classes?

Learner-centered classes encourage: A student-Faculty partnership in the learning enterprise. Active and collaborative engagement among students. Reinforcement of student learning through prompt feedback. 8 What Else Do Students Get From Learner-Centered Classes?

9 Learner-centered classes encourage: Communication of high expectations. Promotion of deep understanding of course concepts. What Else Do Students Get From Learner-Centered Classes?

10 Learner-centered instructors are facilitators. How Do I Become A Learner-Centered Instructor?

Begin by taking small steps in creating a learner-centered class… 11 How Do I Create A Learner-Centered Class?

Instructors should: Create learner-centered activities or assignments where the chance for success is high. Select an activity that you can see students accomplishing successfully. 12 How Do I Create A Learner-Centered Class?

Instructors should also: Select an activity that fits your content and fits your teaching style. Slowly increase the number of learner- centered activities or assignments. 13 How Do I Create A Learner-Centered Class?

Let the students control more learning tasks! Allow students to summarize the information. Write summaries on the board. Ask students to look for connections. Allow students to respond to other’s comments. 14 What Should Students Do In A Learner-Centered Class?

Remember: You do not always need to do all the talking! 15 What Should I Do In A Learner-Centered Class?

Talk less and let students discover: Tell students to read their syllabus prior to class, then give them a quiz in the next class. Group students to share answers and look up correct answers. Ask them how many questions did their group answer correctly. 16 Are There Examples of Learner-Centered Instruction?

Instructional design is important. There are four characteristics of a well designed learning experience. 17 What About Instructional Design?

The four characteristics are: Engaging and energizing students. Assignments have students do authentic and legitimate work of the discipline. Students advance to a higher knowledge and skill level of competency with ease. Activities should develop content knowledge and learning skills. 18 What Makes Up A Well-Designed Learning Experience?

Provide timely feedback and follow-up activities that allows students to learn and improve. 19 How Can I Use Evaluations To Promote Learning?

Students who are: Successful Motivated Critical thinkers Life-long learners 20 What’s In It For Me?
