MICHIGAN MODEL FAMILY LIFE CURRICULUM Lifetime Wellness Dr. Cassandra Turner HPELW Advisor

SCS Family Life Curriculum Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, Chapter 6 mandates that a Family Life Curriculum be taught yearly. The law specifies that an “Abstinence Centered” curriculum be used in any district where the county pregnancy rate is 19.5 per 1,000 girls for females ages 15-17.

SCS Family Life Curriculum-Continued The pregnancy rate in Shelby County for girls 15-17 is per 1,000 girls. The Michigan Model is a holistic, “abstinence centered “ curriculum previously used in MCS legacy schools. Students will receive instruction in a Family Life Curriculum unless parents ‘Opt-Out’ of the instruction.

Decision Making Skills The Michigan Model is a holistic, “abstinence-centered” scripted curriculum that teaches students about: Decision Making Skills Social, Physical and Emotional Changes Family Roles and Responsibilities

Michigan Model Family Life Curriculum (Sample Letter) (Date) Dear Parents: Your child is about to begin, or may have already begun, a period of rapid growth called puberty. Many children wonder if they are normal as they notice themselves and their friends going through physical and emotional changes that prepare them for adulthood. By teaching children about the wonderful ways they are maturing, adults can promote a positive attitude toward sexuality that helps children grow into healthy, responsible adults. Children who have talked to their parents and other trusted adults are more likely to understand the changes they are going through and are able to avoid risky behavior. Too many young people get involved in premature sexual activity that can result in serious problems, such as heartbreak, sexually transmitted disease, HIV infection, or pregnancy.

As your partners in education, our District has approved a series of lessons called the Michigan Model Family Life as an embedded part of our HPELW curriculum in grades 4-9. The lessons were endorsed by the Tennessee Department of Education and will be taught in your child’s HPELW classes beginning mid November. The main focus of these lessons is two-fold: Promote appreciation and respect for the amazing changes experienced by self and others. 2. Equip children with the skills they need to postpone sexual intercourse. Your child will be encouraged to talk to you about growing up and to ask you questions. Interviews with a parent or another trusted adult will be assigned as homework in order to promote open communication. Keep in mind that Memphis City Schools values parental choice. You can “Opt-Out” to have your child EXCLUDED from participation. Please submit in writing the “Opt- Out” form for your child and return it to the school. Failure to submit the “Opt-Out” form will result in your child participating in the Michigan Model Family Life curriculum lessons. Sincerely, (Principal) (Teacher)

March 18, 2013 Re: Family Life Curriculum Grade 6 Dear Parents/Guardians: Family Life instruction is mandated by Tennessee Law, (Public Chapter 565 dated May 25, 1989; amended August 2012), and has been implemented in Shelby County Schools since 1991. The Family Life Curriculum will be taught in your child’s classroom during the week of April 29 – May 3, 2013. The 6th Grade Curriculum consists of locally prepared “age appropriate” lesson plans designed to teach concepts about the family, friendship, and responsibility. The school counselor presents one lesson to 6th graders separated by gender. Lessons in the Family Life Curriculum were carefully evaluated by the staff and shared with the community before receiving board approval in 1991 and revised, July 2009. Copies of the guides are available for your review in the public libraries, SCS school libraries, and online: http://www.scsk12.org/SCS/curriculum_guides/Family-Life-6-8/index.html. Parents/Guardians who object to their child’s participation in this program have the option of requesting that their child be exempted from this instruction by written request to the principal. Your child’s grades will not be affected by this exemption; however, an alternate assignment will be given. As always, we appreciate your assistance and support of our instructional programming. Sincerely, cc: Principals

Diagnoses of HIV Infection among Adolescents and Young Adults Aged 13–24 Years, by Race/Ethnicity, 2008–2011 United States and 6 Dependent Areas During 2008 through 2011, blacks/African Americans accounted for more than 55% of diagnoses of HIV infection each year among adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 24 years in the United States and 6 dependent areas. In 2011, of persons aged 13 to 24 years diagnosed with HIV infection, 60% were black/African American, 18% were white, 19% were Hispanic/Latino, 2% were persons of multiple races, 1% each were Asian and American Indian/Alaska Native, and less than 1% were Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander.   The racial/ethnic distribution of diagnoses of HIV infection in persons aged 13 to 24 years differs substantially from the distribution of diagnoses among all adults and adolescents (aged 13 and over) in 2010. Among all adults and adolescents diagnosed with HIV infection in 2009, 45% were black/African American, 29% were white, 22% were Hispanic/Latino, 2% were Asian, 1% were of multiple races, and less than 1% each were American Indian/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander. Data include persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection regardless of stage of disease at diagnosis. All displayed data are estimates. Estimated numbers resulted from statistical adjustment that accounted for reporting delays, but not for incomplete reporting. Hispanics/Latinos can be of any race. Note.
