PHONICS SCREENING Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Children have a daily taught session of phonics that teaches the children to recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes, building up to identifying the different contributions of letters make such as ‘sh’, ‘oo’. The National phonics screening check is a statutory assessment that was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils. The test will take place the week beginning 16 th June 2014.

PHONICS SCREENING It comprises of a list of 40 words and nonsense words. Your child will read these words one to one with their teacher. see phonics screening test example in your packs.

Supporting Reading at Home

Why is daily reading at home important? A recent world wide research project found that: o active parental involvement at the beginning of school was a significant trigger for developing children's reading skills that would carry through until they were teenagers. o what was important was that parents read books regularly with their children - such as several times a week - and that they talked about what they were reading together

What you can do to support your child at home… Spend 10 minutes a day reading with your child. Talk about the pictures and characters and make up your own stories. Talk about the phonemes in the book and explore tricky words, trying to make clear which letters make which sounds. Ensure children know what the spelling pattern is every week and look for that in your books at home. Make a special place to keep reading books from school, books borrowed from the library and books bought as presents. It will show how important reading is to you. Make sure reading is pleasurable for you and your child! Look at newspapers together and point out more unusual words. Make a word box and put in new words your child has learnt.

What you can do to support your child at home… Let your child see you reading and talk about what you like and don’t like reading. Have a longer reading session together. Get your child to choose a selection of their favourite books. You could use a story CD/i-tunes download on your phone/ipad/kindle. Create ‘My Book about Everything’ with your child. It will get bigger as they do. Include photographs of the family, ‘colour’ pages on which you stick things of one colour cut out of magazines, your child’s drawings and so on. Get your child to retell a favourite picture book in their own words.
