Discovering Clay Hill By Hallie Hamilton

Discovering Clay Hill Clay Hill is located on Old Lebanon Road in Campbellsville, Kentucky. Lebanon Middle School Students get an opportunity to explore the wooded area, take soil and water samples, and use GPS. I used the GPS to map the locations that students visited during our trip. Now teachers can use this as a tool to prepare students for the trip in the future.

Students were greeted by the owners of Clay Hill when we arrived. Our first task was using popsicle sticks to learn about types of nature at Clay Hill. The red sticks were used as Oak trees and the blue for all the salamanders, etc. This activity had advanced our knowledge at Clay Hill and we were excited to learn more about the plantation. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

During the beginning of our hike through the Clay Hill paths, our science teacher informed us about more artifacts. She included facts that everyone was interested in and had a great time listening too. One interesting fact we learned was that Clay Hill use to be a slave plantation. There were also great views around us and wonderful sounds. We all stopped to enjoy the breathtaking experience. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

Our next adventure was to explore around the famous Cobb Bench. This bench was built a by teachers in Kentucky. It took a few weeks to make the bench from clay, straw, and sand. They even incorporated recycled materials such as bottles and cans into the sculpture. The bench has different textures, because they wanted to help the sight impaired children who visited. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

Our teacher told us that we were going to meet the real owner of Clay Hill, we were all excited. We couldn’t wait to hear the experiences that Dr. Wettle has encountered during his years at Clay Hill. His main point about Clay Hill was about the environment. He wanted to teach the students about importance of recycling and wildlife. It was very interesting to learn about what kind of pond animals there were as well as other facts. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

The next location is the lizard search. At this station, we got to learn and even see different types of salamanders. We all got to get in groups and prepared to go on the hunt. The groups that we had all traveled deep in the woods start the search. We had to pick up tree stumps that were laid on the forest floor. Almost under every one, there were worms and salamanders. We all had a great time with our group and learned from the experience. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

Our adventure through the woods didn’t stop at the lizard hunt. We traveled even deeper with our tour guide through steps that were built at Clay Hill. At first we didn’t know where we were headed and we couldn’t wait to find out. Through the long path our guide pointed out information about the trees and little lakes. We were half way there when we stopped for a break. The next stop was Angel Springs. Legend Trail Distance (Meters)

Angel Springs is a memorial for the former owners daughter, Joan White Howell. She was important to Clay Hill. She managed the wild life and various locations at Clay Hill. Some important family members had decided to spread her ashes on the memorial sight. The little angel represents what her father called her when she was young, “My Beautiful Angel.” The story was very sad, but we were glad to say a few prayers and visit her memorial.
