Rape Definitions: Rape: sexual intercourse by force. Sexual Assault: intentional sexual attack.

4 Types of RapeHow to avoid… 1. Stranger Not common Don’t walk alone Take a self defense class 2. Acquaintance Someone you know Co-worker, classmate, neighbor, family member Use your instincts Avoid alcohol 3. Date Dating or “going out” with the person Avoid alcohol Stay in public places Double-date

4 Types of Rape 4. Statutory Rape Sexual relations with a person who has not reached the statutory age of consent. DOES NOT MATTER if they both consented! IL LAW basically reads… When a person 17 or older has sex with someone under 17 A person could be convicted as a sex offender and it will go on their record PROTECTION OF MINORS

What is statutory rape? It refers to an act of sex involving a person deemed BY STATUTE to be below the age of consent. In other words: If the law passed by the legislature states that she (or he) is underage - even if they say yes - it makes no difference. The law deems them to be incapable of making that consent. Therefore, anyone having sex with them has committed STATUTORY rape. What does this mean to you?... In Illinois, 17 is the legal age of consent 16 with a 17 ILLEGAL!

Why isn’t rape reported? Embarrassment Guilt “Maybe it was my fault.” Don’t know where to go Scared Reputation “Everyone will find out.” Threats “No one will believe you.” Rape is the most underreported violent crime.

Why rape should be reported… Prevent others from being raped Relieve stress Get it off your chest Closure Against the law Feel safe

Statute of Limitations If a victim is over 18, as long as the crime is reported to police within 2 years, that victim has 10 years to have the case prosecuted. If the victim was under 18 at the time of the assault (even if they're over 18 now), they have 20 years from their 18th birthday to report. So until they're 38.

What should a victim do? 1. Get help from someone in your support group 2. Go to hospital Don’t SHOWER before you go Don’t change clothes 3. Report to police 4. Seek professional counseling VOICE Sexual Assault Services Act Quickly

What happens during the medical exam? A medical professional will test you for STDs, including HIV/AIDS. These tests may involve taking blood or saliva samples. Although the thought of getting an STD after a rape is extremely scary, the quicker a person finds out about any infection, the more effectively he or she can be treated. Doctors can start you on immediate treatment courses for STDs, including HIV/AIDS, that will greatly increase your protection against developing these diseases. If you're female, a medical professional may treat you to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, if you wish. A medical professional will examine you internally to check for any injury that might have been caused by the rape. A medical professional or trained technician may look for and take samples of the rapist's hair, skin, nails, or bodily fluids from your clothes or body. If you think you've been given a rape drug, a doctor or technician can test for this, too. Be aware that this toxicology test covers any and all illegal drugs. From Teens Health

A Case of Acquaintance Rape ANN’S STORY I first met Jim at a party. He was really hot. I wanted to meet him but I wasn’t sure how. I didn’t want to seem too forward, then he came over and introduced himself. We talked and found we had a lot in common, I really liked him. When he asked me over to his place for a drink, I thought it would be okay. He was such a good listener and I wanted him to ask me out again. When we got to his room, the only place to sit was on the bed. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea, but what else could I do? We talked for a while and then he made his move. I was so startled. He started by kissing, I really liked him so the kissing was nice. But then he pushed me down on the bed. I tried to get up and I told him to stop. He was so much bigger and stronger. I got scared and I started to cry. I froze and he raped me. It took only a couple of minutes and it was terrible. When it was over he kept asking me what was wrong, like he didn’t know. He had just forced himself on me and thought it was ok. He drove me home and he said he wanted to see me again. I’m so afraid to see him. I never thought this would happen to me. JIM’S STORY I first met her at a party. She looked really hot, wearing a sexy dress that showed off her great body. We started talking right away. I knew that she liked me by the way she kept smiling and touching my arm when she talked to me. She seemed pretty relaxed so I asked her back to my place for a drink. When she said yes, I knew it’d be a good night! When we got to my place, we sat on the bed and kissed. At first everything was great, then when I started to lay her down on the bed, she started twisting and saying she didn’t want to. I’ve heard that most women say they don’t like to appear too easy, so I knew she was just going through the motions. When she stopped struggling, I knew she would have to throw in some tears before we did it. She was still very upset afterwards, and I just don’t understand it! If she didn’t want to have sex, why did she come back to the room with me? You could tell by the way she dressed and acted that she wasn’t innocent, so why she had to put up such a struggle, I don’t know.

What could they have done differently to prevent what happened? Ann could have… Jim could have…
