Skiing!!! By: Elana, Lindsey, and Nikki

Introduction: Have you ever heard of skiing? Well if you haven't, this is the presentation for you! Skiing can be a hard and intense sport. There are all different kinds of skiing, but if you want to learn more check out our amazing presentation!

Equipment And Trails Skiers wear helmets, skis, ski boots, goggles, and gloves. A helmet is the most important piece of equipment for skiers because head injuries can be dangerous. Goggles help protect skiers’ eyes from sunlight, wind, and snow. Ski boots are made from plastic and are designed to keep feet from moving around while skiing. Skis are made from aluminum and fiberglass. Racing and freestyle skis are different shapes and sizes. Skiers use their poles to help them balance while turning. On a mountain, green circle trails are the easiest, blue square trails are medium, and black diamond trails are the hardest.

Ski Racing! Alpine ski racing is an Olympic sport! There are different kinds of races like Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G. The reason they are all different is because some gates are farther away from each other and some courses are longer. Racers are separated into boys and girls because boys are usually heavier than girls. Racers have different equipment than people who are skiing just for fun because the racing equipment can make them go faster and can keep them safer. A ski suit is one example of special racing equipment. Ski racers go through high speed gates when going downhill. It’s important for them to tuck at the end of gates. If they get disqualified for touching the gates, the judges won’t count their runs. Racers are scored by the amount of time it takes them to complete the course. If there is more than one run, scores are added to decide each racer’s place. The racer with the fastest time wins!

Freestyle Skiing! Freestyle skiing usually involves rails, jumps and special skis. Freestyle skiing is becoming more and more popular- Competitions and new events are added all the time. At many mountains, there is usually a “Terrain Park” where people can freestyle ski. Some freestyle skiers enjoy taking on moguls. There are many freestyle moves and tricks. For “Back scratchers,” both knees bend up so the ski tails come close to the skier’s back. For a “Spread Eagle,” both legs and arms spread in the air. For a “Daffy,” the legs spread apart like a running stride. Some competitors start when they are kids or teenagers. Aerial competitors often practice their tricks on a trampoline and in a pool before on skis! a
